The American actor Liev Schreiber is a six times Golden Globe nominee, and winner of a Tony award. The movie star, film writer, producer and director is one of Ukraine’s most dedicated ambassadors.

Schreiber was born in San Francisco, but he has Ukrainian roots. In the early 2000s he became interested in his ancestral homeland, visiting Ukraine to find the village his grandfather was born in. He never did find that village, but instead wrote a movie script inspired by his journey; Everything Is Illuminated, starring Elijah Wood and Eugene Hütz, came out in 2005. The main character — a young jewish man — comes to Ukraine to find the woman that saved his grandfather from fascists during WW2.

When Ukraine was attacked again — this time not by fascists, but by ruzzians — Schreiber actively offered his assistance: he founded the BlueCheck Ukraine initiative, made borscht for refugees at a train station in Przemyśl with the World Central Kitchen humanitarian organization, visited Lviv to support the Ukraine Needs You psychological help project, and became an official ambassador for UNITED24’s Medical Aid direction of support on July 6th, 2022.

“I’m thankful for Ukraine and the battle its people are fighting every day simply for the right to exist. I’m grateful for the reminder to cherish and protect the freedoms and the liberties that we have in our own country. How essential they are to our way of life. The best form of gratitude is tangible support,”

said Schreiber.

During another visit to Ukraine, Schreiber visited Bucha and Borodianka alongside his fellow ambassador, Andriy Schevchenko.  These two towns suffered immensely from the russian invasion in the spring of 2022. There, the two ambassadors launched the 24,000 Friends of Ukraine project, encouraging everyone to subscribe to a monthly donation of $24 via UNITED24.

In the Fall of 2022, when regular bombings by russia were damaging critical infrastructure, Ukraine was faced with the prospect of emergency (and later, planned) outages to save electricity and heat. Schreiber initiated a fundraiser to purchase generators for Ukrainian hospitals.

“Ukrainian medics have been working under shelling and bombing since the first day of the war. Their hands work miracles every day, saving human lives. I know they are brave enough to work with candles and flashlights. And the least we can do for them is to create conditions in which they can simply do their job. The most important job,”

said Schreiber.

After his announcement, the first $100,000 was collected within just a few hours. Eventually, other ambassadors joined the fundraiser and together they managed to gather $3,000,000 of support for the project.
