* Boops boops (Linnaeus, 1758) —Bogue

Dentex dentex (Linnaeus, 1758) —Common dentex

* Dentex gibbosus (Rafinesque-Schmaltz, 1810)—Pink dentex

Not recorded from Madeira by Bauchot & Hureau in

Whitehead et al. (1986: 888) or Bauchot & Hureau in Quéro et al. (1990: 792). On October 10th, 1986 one of the authors (MB) saw a specimen of this species (MMF 24131, SL 211 mm) being caught by hand line in the Bay of Funchal. The specimen in question was new to the fisherman and may be one of the first specimens of this species ever caught in Madeira. The species was never seen before in the local fish market; therefore it appears to be a recent addition to the local ichthyofauna. Now the species is common and fished commercially. Recorded from Madeira by Wirtz (1994: 76), with a colour photo from Madeira.

Diplodus annularis (Linnaeus, 1758) —Annular seabream

Recorded for Madeira by Bauchot and Hureau in Whitehead et al. (1986). We consider this a doubtful record. No specimen of this species is in the MMF collection and the first author has never seen this species (known to him from the Mediterranean Sea) in more than 1000 dives along the coasts of Madeira. The specimen NRM 19856 in the collection of the NRM, originally recorded as D. annularis from Madeira, was reidentified by us as D. vulgaris .

* Diplodus cervinus ( Lowe, 1838) View in CoL —Zebra seabream

* Diplodus sargus (Linnaeus, 1758) View in CoL —White seabream

* Diplodus vulgaris (Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1817)—Common two-banded seabream

* Lithognathus mormyrus (Linnaeus, 1758) —Striped seabream

Recorded from Madeira Island by Alves & Alves (2003). This species is common at Porto Santo Island, where it is frequently fished from the town pier (figure 6).

* Oblada melanura (Linnaeus, 1758) —Saddled seabream

* Pagellus acarne ( Risso, 1827) View in CoL —Axillary seabream

* Pagellus bogaraveo (Brünnich, 1768) View in CoL —Blackspot seabream

* Pagellus erythrinus (Linnaeus, 1758) —Common pandora

Pagrus auriga Valenciennes, 1843 —Redbanded seabream

* Pagrus pagrus (Linnaeus, 1758) —Common seabream

* Sarpa salpa (Linnaeus, 1758) —Salema

Sparus auratus Linnaeus, 1758 —Gilthead seabream

Introduced to Madeira (not considered as a native species), recently escaped from aquaculture ( Alves and Alves 2003).

* Spondyliosoma cantharus (Linnaeus, 1758) —Black seabream

Territorial males of this species at Madeira (and the Canary Islands, SCUBA diving observations by the first author) show a color pattern distinctly different from territorial males in the Mediterranean Sea. See the color photos in Debelius (1998: 180).
