Indian billionaire and mining tycoon, Harpal Randhawa, along with his son Amer, tragically lost their lives when their private plane crashed near a diamond mine in the southwestern region of Zimbabwe, as reported by various media outlets.
The reports indicate that the privately-owned plane, carrying Harpal Randhawa, Amer, and four others, crashed due to a "technical fault", potentially leading to a mid-air explosion.
The crash occurred in the Zvamahande area of Mashava.
Harpal Randhawa, renowned as the owner of RioZim, a diversified mining company involved in the production of gold and coal, as well as the refining of nickel and copper, was on a journey with his son in a Cessna 206 aircraft owned by RioZim. They were en route from Harare to the Murowa diamond mine when the tragic incident took place on Friday. The single-engine aircraft crashed in proximity to the Murowa Diamonds mine, which is partially owned by RioZim.
The names of the deceased have not yet been officially released by the police, but journalist and filmmaker Hopewell Chin'ono, a friend of Harpal Randhawa, confirmed his death via a tweet. Chin'ono also informed the public about the memorial service to honor the father-son duo.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reports a plane crash which occurred on September 29 between 7.30 am and 8 am, where six people are confirmed dead. The Murowa Diamond Company (RioZim)-owned white and red Zcam aircraft had left Harare for the mine at 6 am and crashed about 6km from Mashava." police said.
