NEW DELHI: IPS officer Manoj Kumar Verma was appointed the new Kolkata Police Commissioner on Tuesday after the West Bengal government removed Vineet Kumar Goyal, the former commissioner and transferred him to the role of ADG and IGP of the Special Task Force (STF) of West Bengal Police.
Goyal was removed by the Mamata government a day after she met the protesting doctors who sought the top cop's removal.
The state also appointed Dr Kaustav Nayak as the new Director of the Institute of Health and Family Welfare after removing him and DHS Debashis Haldar from their respective posts on the previous day.
Who is Manoj Kumar Verma?Manoj Kumar Verma, an IPS officer from the 1998 batch previously served as the Additional Director General (ADG) and Inspector General of Police (IGP) in charge of Law & Order during his last assignment in January of this year.
He had replaced Jawed Shamim, who was considered a top contender for the position of Kolkata Police Commissioner, Shamim will now assume Verma's previous role.
Earlier in 2022, while serving as the Barrackpore Police Commissioner, Manoj Kumar Verma also assumed additional responsibilities as the IG (Anti-Corruption Branch).
Whereas Vineet Kumar Goyal, an IPS Officer from the 1994 Batch, has an impressive educational background, having graduated from IIT Kharagpur and IIT Kanpur.
Throughout his career with the Kolkata Police, he has held various significant positions and has also served as the Joint Commissioner of Police, Special Task Force.
