Further news has come through from the FIDE Congress at the Olympiad in Bled. The main story is the proposals for the new FIDE World Championship cycle. Yasser Seirawan has led the process for the new cycle but significantly he mentions that there is a lot of disillusionment amongst the top players. One can imagine a number of reasons for this not least the fact that 2005 is the earliest a player can become World Chess Champion if his name isn't Kasparov, Kramnik, Leko or Ponomariov. In my opinion this is certainly the last chance saloon for the World Chess Championships, if the reorganisation fails to raise interest it is very hard to see where we go from here. A successful reunification series with lots of publicity in 2003 is very important.
I have a few quibbles with the new format. The double elimination competition is very clever producing a qualification process which has a fair chance of the better players getting through to the next stage. I do wonder where the finance for this is going to come from for a 128 player event. Once the field is reduced to 8 players however things look more promising. In the past there were problems getting sponsors for Candidates matches and I have always advocated a Candidates Tournament instead which I think is a simpler and potentially more sponsor attractive event. I do understand the potential problems of players easing up once they have qualified and outright throwing of games in all-play-all formats and I presume this is why this hasn't been considered. However the addition of the World Champion to the later stages of the Candidates may prove to make them far more attractive in the past. I also like the idea of the top 200 players having a say in professional matters, this is long, long overdue.
Hope you enjoy this issue.
Mark
There is now some further news from the FIDE Congress.
The main issue was the new FIDE World Championship format in the light of the Prague Unity Agreement.
There are a lot of details available at: https://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=604
The main outstanding issue is Ponomariov's insistance on draw odds as FIDE Champion in his match against Kasparov.
Yasser Seirawan has explained the proposed new cycle in detail in the above article.
Next year the reunification process will see the Kramnik - Leko April-May 2003, Kasparov - Ponomariov in May-June 2003 the unification match in October 2003. The first double elimination event will be in December 2003.
There are proposals for cycles in 2003-5 (2nd cycle ends May-June 2005) and 2005-2007 (3rd cycle).
In summary these proposals are:
The process will start with a large double-knockout elimination qualification event (128 players) which is similar to the current FIDE knockout formula (2 game matches followed by speed players) except that players can afford to lose one match. This will then be followed by Candidates matches with 8 players. Quarter Finals have 6 games, Semi-Finals 8 games and then a World Championship Finals of 12 games (over a period of 17 days). There will be various rapid and blitz playoffs if matches are tied. The difference between the second and third cycles is that Kasparov, Kramnik, Leko and Ponomariov will all be in the second round Candidates at some stage (2 losers of the initial join 8 double eliminates qualifiers in the Candidates, 5 winners joined by the loser of the reunification final in the Quarter Finals and the winner of the reunification joins 3 qualifiers for the semi-finals). In the 3rd Cycle the Champion will join seven players from the double elimination event in the Quarter Finals and that's how it will be for following cycles.
The Prague Agreement referred to the setting up of an organisation for the consulatation of professional players the GM Steering Committee. This is under the chairmanship of Yasser Seirawan. Yasser Seirawan refers to a lot of disillusionment amongst the top players and that because of this he found it difficult to find players to serve on his GM Steering Committee.
Players on that committee in Bled were: Mikhail Gurevich, Gilberto Milos, Joel Lautier, Zurab Azmaiparashvili, Artur Jussupow, Judit Polgar, Utut Adianto, Alexander Khalifman and Yasser Seirawan. Smbat Lputian and Mikhail Krasenkow were added as members during the Olympiad. The statutes of the organisation grants voting rights to the top 200 players in the World. There will be a vote on time control issues amongst this group.
The time controls proposed by the GM Steering Committe is 40 moves in two hours, followed by 20 moves in one hour, and finally 15 minutes plus 30 seconds bonus for each move made in the third time control (40/2, 20/1, 15+30) which Seirawan refers to as the professional time control, or simply, "Professional Chess."
The FIDE General Assembly set up a World Championship Committee of Georgios Makropoulos (Chairman), GM Zurab Azmaiparashvili and Israel Gelfer.
The proposals to make the Olympiad a rapid play were fortunately rejected. Menorca Spain have some financial problems in hosting the next Olympiad although they are confident they can be resolved. They however want the event reduced in length to maybe 12 rounds. Jacksonville Florida have offered to hold the event if Spain can't. The 2006 Olympiad will be held in Torino, Italy. The Olympiad time rate is likely to be the 40 moves in 90 minutes as used in Bled, a timerate that was not universally liked by the players.
There were also discussions surrounding the expenses of former FIDE President Florencio Campomanes.
The Curacao 1962-2002 chess tournament takes place November 16th-28th 2002. The tournament commemorates the 40th Anniversary of the Candidates tournament in 1962.

Garry Kasparov played a six game blitz match against rising German star 17 year old Elisabeth Paehtz. The event was part of an appearance Kasparov put in at the Electonica technology show in Munich on November 13th 2002.
Kasparov was on the East German Chip Manufacturer ZMG's stand.
Kasparov is having a documentary made about him in connection with the Kasparov vs. Deep Blue Match. The film maker is Vikram Jayanti who was co-producer on the brilliant Ali documentary "When We Were Kings".
Paetz put up a good showing in the early games missing 35.Kg1 to win the first game and being a piece up in game 3 (although in this case certainly not without compensation for Kasparov).
