TBILISI, December 4. /TASS/. Georgian police detained opposition activist and former lawmaker Alexander Elisashvili over a brawl in the capital city of Tbilisi, Imedi television reported.
According to the report, Elisashvili is accused of starting a scuffle with the head of the National Congress of Azerbaijanis in Georgia, Ali Babayev, on the grounds of politics. Babayev was hospitalized after the tussle, but he has already been discharged.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Interior Ministry said it detained Niki Gvaramia, leader of the opposition Akhali party, after searches were conducted in his office in a case of unrest at Tbilisi rallies.
A new wave of rallies started in Georgia on November 28. They were sparked by a statement from Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, who said the ruling Georgian Dream — Democratic Georgia party had decided to put on ice any EU accession talks until the end of 2028 and turn down any funding from the bloc. According to the official, the decision was prompted by regular EU blackmail in relation to the talks, along with calls to rescind some recent laws and sanction Georgian officials.
