MOSCOW, December 4. /TASS/. As technology gets better and better, we may one day see biological weapons that integrate AI, Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev said.
"We discussed the future of biotechnologies. While their rapid development offers promising opportunities for the economy and social progress, there are also significant dangers, such as biological terrorism and the potential creation of novel biological weapons using AI," Medvedev wrote on his VKontakte page following a meeting of the Security Council’s specialized inter-agency commission.
During the meeting, he noted that Russia must constantly work on shaping reliable defenses against bio-terrorism. The politician pointed out that the development of AI-based bio-weapons carries risks. "Today, we cannot tell who will use them or how," Medvedev said.
The deputy chairman also pointed to the convergence of AI and synthetic biology as a critical area requiring close attention. While such advances could accelerate the development of life-saving drugs, they also amplify biological risks, with the number of biological threats continuing to grow, Medvedev warned.
