E. A. Abbey was a painter. Born in Philadelphia, he was self-taught and initially employed in a wood engraver's shop. In 1872, Abbey began working as an illustrator for Harper's. He also painted murals, including those for the Boston Public Library and Pennsylvania Capitol.
