Graduate of the University of Michigan Law School and later professor of law.

John Barker Waite was born in Toledo, Ohio, Aug. 14, 1882, the son of Richard and Alice Jane (Voris)Barker. He received an A.B. degree from Yale, 1905 and an LL.B. from the University of Michigan in 1907. He married Harriet Ripley Williams, Aug. 4, 1915 and had one son, Richard Ripley. Waite was admitted Ohio bar, 1907 and practiced at Toledo for five years. He joined the faculty of the University of Michigan Law School in 1912. He was city alderman 1939-1945 and served on the U.S. Supreme Court commission to revise rules 1941-1945. Waite was the author of numerous books, including: Patent Law, 1920; The Law of Sales, 1921; Cases on the Law of Patents, 1924; Cases on Criminal Law and Procedure, 1931; Criminal Law in Action, 1934; Waite on Sales, 1938; and The Prevention of Repeated Crime, 1943. He was editor in chief Michigan Law Review (monthly), 1921-31.
