John Niven (William John Niven, Jr., 1921-1997), American historian, author of The coming of the Civil War, 1837-1861 (1990), biographies of Gideon Welles, Israel Putnam, John C. Calhoun, Salmon P. Chase, and other works. He received his M.A. (1947) and Ph.D. (1954) at Columbia University. In 1951-1960, he worked for General Dynamics Corporation. From 1965 to his death in 1997, he was associate professor, professor, and professor emeritus at Claremont Graduate School.
