W.M. Flinders Petrie was born in Kent, educated at home by his well-educated parents, and showed an interest in antiquities. He began his career with studies of English sites, notably Stonehenge, 1880, then went to Egypt where he became the major figure in exploration of the pyramids. He was Professor of Egyptology at the University College, London, 1892-1933, and was the major influence on the next generation of archaeologists. He was knighted in 1923.
