1 HW: Blood Type Bar Graph. Sherlock # 5-8 this Friday.
Do Now: /6/16o Today we will continue learning about blood. After writing down your homework, we will listen to Tim and Moby explain Blood component onto the sheet provided.

2 Heart, blood vessels, & blood
highway Heart, blood vessels, & blood Arteries – carries blood away Capillaries – exchange substances Veins – carries blood to (visit) 55% plasma Molecules from digested food (glucose, fat, vitamins, minerals, hormones, waste)

3 wbc platelets rbc bone marrow Severe blood loss, you could bleed to death

4 What are the blood types found in our class?
AB O

5 Do you know your blood type?
Statistics: USA: World: O 43% O 63% A 42% A 21% B 10% B 15% AB 4% AB 1% "The rarest blood type is the type that's not available when YOU need it!" AB- is the rarest blood type (.6% of people have it)

6 Blood Type is Inherited
You will get one gene from Mom You will get one gene from Dad

7 Blood Groups Everyone is born with a certain type of blood which is the same for your lifetime. People with Type A have an A Protein “attached” to the outer coat of every red blood cell. B blood has a B Protein. AB blood has BOTH A Protein and B Protein. O blood has Neither Protein.

8 Rh Factor American scientist Alexander Weiner discovered a group of proteins on the surface of red blood cells in Rhesus Monkeys If you have the extra marker, you are + and if you don’t you are - Rhesus Monkey Not this type of Reese’s

9 What blood type is this??!

10 What Happens if you receive the wrong blood type??
If 2 opposing blood types MIX and the blood will clump For Example: Blood type A has anti-B clumping agents in the blood (It will clump when given blood type B or AB) Blood type B has anti-A clumping agents (It will clump when given blood type A or AB) Blood type AB has NO clumping agents. It can receive ANY type of blood (Universal Recipient) Blood type O has anti-A AND anti-B clumping agents. The only blood type O can receive is O. It can donate blood to ANY type of blood (Universal Donor)

12 Brain-Pop: Blood 1) Blood takes ____________ and nutrients to every cell in your body. It is made up of lots of different kinds of cells. 2) The most common cell in your blood is the erythrocyte, or ______ ______ _____. 14 Homework Using the data provided by the American Red Cross, create a BAR graph of the data. Be sure to use a graphing checklist to ensure that you have included everything necessary for a complete graph.
