Maddalena d’Alfonso is an architect, essayist and researcher. Qualified Associate Professor in 2017 - following the doctorate cum laude, in 2004 - she held courses at IADE, Portugal and Politecnico di Milano, Italy, among many other academic organizations. Her ability to combine research with museographic culture has been applied to the conception and design of cultural exhibitions and projects.
The architect’s innovative method of interdisciplinary investigation stems from the interest in the theoretical and visual analysis of architecture, art, photography and landscape, connected both to history and present day architectural issues. She conceived cultural projects for the Fundação Gulbenkian (Portugal), the Fundação Iberê Camargo (Brazil), the MIT Museum in Cambridge (MA, USA), Triennale di Milano and Politecnico di Milano, Italy as an architect, concept developer, designer and curator. She has been a member of DASTU (Department of Architecture and Urban Studies of Milan) and founded Md’A Design agency where they provide content curation, creative design solutions and ideas to define and re-define every project.
d’Alfonso’s publications include: Two Museums by Àlvaro Siza (Electa 2009); De Chirico. O sentiment from Arquitetura (Camargo 2011), Città Sospesa. L’Aquila dopo il Terremoto (Actar 2015), Come lo spazio trasforma l’arte come l’arte trasforma lo spazio (Silvana 2016, Milan) and the book Warm Modernity (Silvana 2016, Milano), which has recived RED DOT award.
The exhibition “The landscape of rights. Photographing the Italian Constitution” designed and curated by arch. d’Alfonso in 2017 for Comune di Milano – received the Medal of high representation from the Presidency of Italian Republic.

The Indian Architecture building democracy" it comes to life from a book, which will become its catalog, it illustrates the character of the new utopia of the project participated in its various forms and it's the result of an interdisciplinary research Italo-Indian lasting five years. The history of living in the global democratic cities seems to have been played between Europe and the United States, and both documented in the works of famous architects such as Alexander, Giancarlo de Carlo, the Smithson and Cedric Price. They have brought to the world of architecture a wind of renewal, in the name of a sharing of objectives and aims of the project. Today the idea of the open source architecture binds to those origins. A Protocol drawn up in 1945 by Otto Koenigsberger, declined in nearly one hundred cases in India and then literally taken in more than half the world, that this rules and economies of the planning of the trial cities prototype, tell us instead that the so-called "Parte-cipative Architecture" for the inclusion interculturalral took its first steps in the post-colonial territories between India and Africa. The exhibition illustrates the complexity of the post-colonial modernity, its factual existence and its globalized consequences, present even today trought four interdisciplinary issues. A Fundação Iberê Camargo expressa imensa satisfação ao apresentar em sua sede a exposição De Chir... more A Fundação Iberê Camargo expressa imensa satisfação ao apresentar em sua sede a exposição De Chirico: O Sentimento da Arquitetura-obras da Fondazione Giorgio e Isa de Chirico, dedicada ao mestre da metafísica Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978), e que segue para a Casa Fiat de Cultura e para o Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand-MASP, consolidando a especial parceria existente entre estas três instituições. Com curadoria de Maddalena d'Alfonso, a exposição é composta por obras da Fondazione Giorgio e Isa de Chirico, e representa aquela que talvez seja a mais significativa seleção de obras do artista já exposta no Brasil. Nela, apresenta-se ao público cerca de 60 obras, entre pinturas e esculturas, que pertencem ao período chamado neometafísico, bem como 66 litografias que de Chirico realizou para os Calligrammi de Guillaume Apollinaire (1930). O recorte proposto pela curadoria examina uma das temáticas centrais da obra do artista: a arquitetura da cidade e os cenários urbanos pensados como dimensão interior e psicológica do homem moderno. A finalidade principal da exposição é, justamente, oferecer ao visitante uma leitura do espaço urbano dechirichiano e da relação entre a figura e o espaço arquitetônico, percorrendo temas recorrentes da produção do artista, como as praças da Itália e os interiores ditos metafísicos. De Chirico, idealizador da arte metafísica, não só tem um significado importante pelo seu tratamento inovador no uso do espaço como palco da relação entre homem e mundo, por seu uso da cor e do caráter poético dos seus personagens, mas por ter sido, também, amigo e mentor de Iberê Camargo, influenciando seu trabalho subsequente. Il volume nasce dall’intento di evidenziare, il processo ideativo e creativo del percorso archite... more Il volume nasce dall’intento di evidenziare, il processo ideativo e creativo del percorso architettonico sviluppato da Álvaro Siza, universalmente riconosciuto come uno dei più grandi maestri dell’architettura contemporanea. I lavori a confronto, attraverso un dialogo stretto e non convenzionale tra testo, fotografia e disegni autografi, sono il museo di Arte Contemporanea di Serralves a Porto, in Portogallo, e il museo di Iberê Camargo a Porto Alegre, in Brasile. Progettati in anni diversi (fra il 1991 e il 1999 il primo, fra il 1998 e il 2008 il secondo) e per aree affatto dissimili, i due musei comprendono matrici compositive e stilistiche analoghe. Seguendo uno stile unitario nel tempo, Siza si è sempre occupato di determinare una mimesi con i luoghi in cui s’inserisce o come ama dire egli stesso di “realizzare una naturalezza nel sentire lo spazio costruito”.
