Description
Description WASHING MACHINE COMPRISING A LAUNDRY COLOUR DETECTION DEVICE
[0001] The present invention relates to a washing machine wherein washing process is performed.
[0002] Particularly in washing machines operated by a single button wherein user intervention in the washing algorithm is minimal, the determination of the most suitable washing process by detecting the color and amount of the laundry is important. Because, for determining the washing process, the weight, type and colour of the laundry play an important role. In the state of the art, the washing machine is operated after the laundry is separated according to their colours.
[0003] In the state of the art International Patent Application No WO9932875, a washing machine, wherein the colour of the laundry disposed in the drum is determined, is explained.
[0004] In the International Patent Application No WO2008000812, a washing machine, wherein the colour of the laundry is detected by the light dependent resistor disposed at the loading port, while the laundry is loaded, and wherein the washing process is performed according to the detected colour values, is explained.
[0005] The aim of the present invention is the realization of a washing machine wherein the colour of the laundry is determined before starting the washing process and the washing process is then performed.
[0006] The washing machine realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention, explicated in the first claim and the respective claims thereof, comprises a light dependent resistor which is disposed in the drum and which detects the light intensity, and a control unit which provides the washing parameters to be determined before starting the washing process, by detecting the colour of the laundry according to the change in the light intensity.
[0007] Thus, without the need for directly detecting the colour of the laundry loaded into the drum, the colour detection can be performed merely by the resistor value which changes according to the light intensity inside the drum. Accordingly, using expensive sensors and softwares in order to
perform color detection is not required.
[0008] The washing machine of the present invention comprises a light dependent resistor, the resistor value of which changes according to the change in the light intensity inside the drum. Thus, the changes in the light intensity inside the drum can be detected electrically in an easier and cheaper manner by using merely a resistor instead of complex and costly optical systems such as camera, infrared scanner and image processing.
[0009] The washing machine, furthermore, comprises a sensor circuit having a light dependent resistor, one end of which is grounded, and a resistor, one end of which is connected to the other end of the light dependent resistor and the other end of which is connected to the power supply, and an out which is taken from the middle of the two resistors. Thus, according to the change of the resistor value, a voltage output is obtained and hence, these resistance values are enabled to be transmitted to the control unit by being converted to values, with which operations can be performed.
[0010] In another embodiment of the present invention, the washing machine comprises a control unit which provides the washing parameters to be determined before starting the washing process, by detecting the amount of the laundry according to the change in the light intensity.
[0011] In an embodiment of the present invention, the light dependent resistor is fixed to the lid frame. Thus, the light dependent resistor is prevented from being damaged by being affected by the heat, water and moisture inside the drum.
[0012] In another embodiment of the present invention, the light dependent resistor is disposed at the loading port of the drum or onto the bellows located at the loading port. Thus, the light dependent resistor is enabled to perform measurements without being effected by the light in the outer environment.
[0013] In another embodiment of the present invention, the washing machine comprises a light source which is disposed into the drum and thus, illuminates the inside of the drum. Thus, the possible effect of the light in the environment, wherein the washing machine is situated, on the changes in the light intensity inside the drum is eliminated and hence, a reference
light intensity inside the drum is provided to be obtained. [0014] In another embodiment of the present invention, the lid is covered with a shield which prevents the light in the outer environment from leaking into the drum even when the lid is closed. [0015] By means of the present invention, before starting the washing process, the colour and amount of the laundry disposed in the drum are enabled to be determined in an easy and cheap manner by the change in the light intensity inside the drum. [0016] A washing machine realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention is illustrated in the attached figures, where: [0017] Figure 1 - is the perspective view of a washing machine. [0018] Figure 2 - is the schematic view of the washing machine. [0019] Figure 3 - is the schematic view of a sensor circuit. [0020] The elements illustrated in the figures are numbered as follows:
1. Washing machine
2. Drum
3. Loading port
4. Lid
5. Light dependent resistor
6. Sensor circuit
7. Control unit
8. Light source
9. Display
[0021] The washing machine (1) of the present invention comprises a drum (2) wherein laundry (L) is disposed, a loading port (3) which provides the laundry (L) to be loaded into the drum (2) and to be unloaded from the drum (2) by the user, a lid (4) which opens and closes the loading port (3) by being mounted to the loading port (3) and which provides access into the drum (2), one or more light dependent resistors (LDR) (5), which detect the light intensity inside the drum (2) and the value of which changes according to the light intensity inside the drum (2), and a control unit (7) which provides the colour of the laundry (L) disposed in the drum (2) to be detected according to the change in the light intensity and thus,
which provides the washing process to be started by determining the washing parameters according to these data (Figure 1 and Figure 2).
[0022] The light dependent resistor (5) is the electronic element, the light dependent resistor (5) value of which changes as the light intensity changes. As the light intensity increases, the light dependent resistor (5) value decreases. Thus, the changes in the light intensity inside the drum (2) can be easily detected.
[0023] The light intensity inside the drum (2) changes according to the colour of the laundry (L) disposed into the drum (2). Accordingly, the change of the light intensity inside the drum (2) effects the value of the light dependent resistor (5). Parameters such as time and temperature which belong to the washing process and which are predetermined by the producer for each laundry (L) colour are installed to the control unit (7). Thus, the change in the light intensity according to the colour of the laundry (L) disposed into the drum (2) is analyzed by the control unit (7), the change in the light intensity is compared with the values predetermined by the producer, and at the end of the comparison process, the colour of the laundry (L) disposed in the drum (2) is decided and the washing process is performed in accordance with the predetermined washing parameters.
[0024] The washing machine (1) comprises a sensor circuit (6) which obtains a voltage output according to the change of the light dependent resistor (5) value. The sensor circuit (6) comprises a resistor, one end of which is connected to the light dependent resistor (5) end that is not grounded and the other end of which is connected to the power supply (V), and an out which is taken from the middle of this resistor and the light dependent resistor (5) and which is connected to the control unit (7). The light dependent resistor (5) is preferably disposed onto the lid (4) in an embodiment (Figure 2 and Figure 3).
[0025] In the experiments performed, it is observed that laundry (L) of different colours disposed in the drum (2) effects the light dependent resistor (5) differently. First white, then yellow, after that orange and finally black laundry (L) is loaded into the drum (2) in the same amounts and the change of the light dependent resistor (5) values with respect to time is
observed. Since the white laundry (L) disposed into the drum (2) absorbs less light than the light the drum (2) surface absorbs when the drum (2) is empty, the white laundry (L) increases the light intensity inside the drum (2). Besides, since the coloured laundry (L) disposed in the drum (2) absorbs light almost at the same levels as the drum (2) surface absorbs when the drum (2) is empty, the coloured laundry (L) causes a less light intensity to occur in comparison with the white laundry (L). Since the black laundry (L) disposed in the drum (2) absorbs the most light, the light intensity inside the drum (2) reaches its lowest level. Accordingly, the value of the light dependent resistor (5) is the lowest for white laundry (L), at the level detected when the drum (2) is empty for coloured laundry (L), and the highest for black laundry (L). Thus, the white laundry is distinguished from the coloured laundry and the washing process is performed according to this distinction. In another embodiment of the present invention, by the control unit (7), the amount of the laundry (L) disposed in the drum (2) is provided to be determined according to the change in the light intensity, and the washing process is provided to be started by the determination of the washing parameters according to these data. In the experiments performed, it is observed that also laundry (L) of the same colour but of different amounts disposed in the drum (2) effects the light dependent resistors (5) differently. Laundry (L) of the same colour is loaded into the drum (2) respectively at intervals of one kilogram difference each and it is observed that the light dependent resistor (5) values change with respect to time. As a result of the experiments performed in this embodiment of the present invention, light dependent resistor (5) values are saved for each laundry (L) amount and each laundry (L) colour. After loading laundry (L) to the washing machine (1), the user closes the lid (4) of the washing machine (1) and when he/she operates the washing machine (1), the light dependent resistor (5) is activated. The light dependent resistor (5) values changing according to the light intensity inside the drum (2) are measured at certain intervals. By means of the sensor circuit (6), the light dependent resistor (5) values changing according to the change in the light intensity
are compared with the light dependent resistor (5) values stored in the control unit (7) and thus, the colour and amount of the laundry (L) disposed in the drum (2) are determined. Accordingly, the washing process is performed by the washing parameters, which are predetermined by the producer according to the amount and colour of the laundry (L).
[0027] In an embodiment of the present invention, the light dependent resistor (5) is disposed at the lid (4) frame such that it will detect the light intensity inside the drum (2). Thus, the light dependent resistor (5) is prevented from being damaged by being affected by the heat, water and moisture inside the drum (2). In this embodiment, the light dependent resistor (5) portion which does not face the inside of the drum (2) is insulated by being surrounded all around for not being effected by the illumination in the outer environment.
[0028] In another embodiment of the present invention, the light dependent resistor (5) is disposed at the loading port (3) of the drum (2) or onto the bellows located at the loading port (3). Thus, the light dependent resistor (5) is enabled to perform measurements more directly without being effected by the light in the outer environment.
[0029] In another embodiment of the present invention, the washing machine (1) comprises a light source (8) which is disposed into the drum (2) and illuminates the inside of the drum (2) and thus, provides a reference light intensity inside the drum (2) to be obtained. Thus, the possible effect of the light in the environment wherein the washing machine (1) is situated on the changes in the light intensity inside the drum (2) is eliminated.
[0030] In another embodiment of the present invention, in order that the possible effect of the light in the environment, wherein the washing machine (1) is situated, on the changes in the light intensity inside the drum (2) can be eliminated, the lid (4) is covered with a shield. Thus, when the lid (4) is closed, the light is completely prevented from leaking into the drum (2) from the outer environment.
[0031] In another embodiment of the present invention, the washing machine (1) comprises a display (9) which transmits the data of the amount and colour
of the laundry (L) inside the drum (2) to the user.
[0032] In yet another embodiment of the present invention, the light dependent resistor (5) does not perform measurement when the lid (4) is open, and when the lid (4) is closed, it performs measurement and when the lid (4) is opened and then closed, all measurements performed previously are set to zero.
[0033] By means of the present invention, before starting the washing process, the colour and amount of the laundry (L) disposed in the drum (2) can be determined by the change in the light intensity inside the drum (2). The washing parameters are determined according to the detection of the colour and amount of the laundry (L) and the washing process is accordingly started. Thus, particularly in washing machines (1) with a single button wherein user intervention is minimal, the determination of the washing process according to the colour and amount of the laundry (L) can be performed independently of the user.
[0034] It is to be understood that the said present invention is not limited to the embodiments disclosed above and an expert in the technique can easily introduce different embodiments. These different embodiments should be considered within the scope of the claims of the present invention, too.
