GRAIN-WASHING MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, VVILLIAM F. MUL- LANEY, CHARLES B. NEUMAN, and MATHEW NICHOLSON, citizens of the United States, and residents of Marshall, in the county of Lyon and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Grain- \Vashing Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide certain new and useful improvements in grain washing machines, arranged in such a manner that when the machine becomes choked up, then the sound grain is prevented from passing over into the overflow employed for carrying off the extraneous matter.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawing forming a. part of this specification, in which the figure is a sectional side elevation of the improvement.
The grain washing machine shown in the drawing is preferably of the type, such as is illustrated in Letters Patent of the United States, No. 871,517, granted to James Mc- Daniel on November 19, 1907, but it is expressly understood that the improvement shown applied to this machine, is readily applicable to other forms of grain washing machines.
The tank A is connected by a ipe B with a suitable source of water supp ly, and the hopper bottom G of the tank A has its dis charge pipe D connected with the beater E, from which the grain passes to the straining device F in the usual manner. A valve G controls the outflow of the sound grain and water from the hopper bottom G into the outlet D, and this valve G has its stem i rising in the chamber H arranged within the tank A, the upper end of the stem G being under the control of the operator above the top H of the chamber H, to permit of adjusting the valve G to regulate the outflow of the grain and water from the hopper bottom C. The grain to be washed is passed into the chamber H by a grain delivery chute I, and within the chamber H extends the mouth of the overflow pipe J for carrying off the extraneous matter floating Specification of Letters Patent.

on the level of the water within the chamber H, the said overflow pipe J connecting with the waste pipe K for carrying off the extraneous matter and surplus water. An overflow pipe L within the tank A connects with the waste pipe K, so that in case the machine is choked up and the water rises in the tank A, it can overflow and be carried off by way of the overflow pipe L and waste pipe K.
The mouth of the overflow pipe J is normally open, but it is adapted to be closed by a valve N held on a valve stem N extending up through the hollow upper portion G of the stem G, and the upper outer end of the valve stem N is connected with one end of a lever O fulcrumed on a bracket 0 carried by the top H of the chamber H. On the lever O is hung a float P which normally holds the valve N in a raised position out of engagement with the mouth of the overflow pipe J, so that when the machine is running, the extraneous matter floating on the level of the water in the chamber H can pass into the overflow pipe J, to be carried off to a suitable place of discharge by the waste pipe K. Now in case the ma chine becomes choked up, the water supplied by the pipe B rising in the tank A and chamber H, finally reaches the float I, thus raising the latter and causing the valve N to move downward to its seat on the mouth of the overflow pipe J, to close the latter. Now it is evident that when the water rises in the chamber H, the sound wheat passing into the chamber and rising with the water therein, cannot pass out of the chamber H by way of the overflow pipe J and run to waste, as the said overflow pipe J is closed by the valve N. As soon as the machine is relieved and is again running normally, then the water in the tank A falls and with it the float P, whereby the valve N is moved oil the mouth of the overflow pipe J, so that the latter is restored to its normal function, that is, to carry off the extraneous matter.
Having thus described our invention, We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A grain washin machine provided with a tank connected with a water supply, means for delivering grain to the tank, a valved outlet in the bottom of the tank for the discharge of the sound grain and water, an overflow in the said tank for carrying ofl? the extraneous matter, and a floatcontrolled valve for automatically closing the said overflow in case the water rises above the said overflow.
2. A grain washing machine provided with a water tank having a hopper bottom, means for supplying water to said tank, a valved outlet for the sound grain leading from the said hopper bottom, an overflow pipe leading from the said tank, the inlet end of said pipe being above the said outlet and at the normal. water line of said tank, a waste pipe with which the said overflow pipe connects for carrying off the extraneous matter, a float controlled "alve for the said overflow pipe and normally held in an open position, the valve closing automatically on a rise of the water in the tank above the normal water line, an overflow pipe in the tank opening above the normal water line and also connected with said waste pipe, and a grain delivery chute extending within the tank and discharging near the bottom thereof.
3. A grain Washing machine provided with a tank connected with a water supply, the tank having a hopper bottom provided with an outlet pipe, means for delivering grain to the tank, an adjustable valve controlling the outflow of the sound grain and Water from the hopper bottom into the outlet pipe, an overflow pipe having its inlet end arranged centrally in the said tank for carrying olf the extraneous matter, a valve for closing the said overflow pipe, the valve being normally held in an open position, and means for closing said valve on a rise of the water in the tank above the normal water line.
