Description

J. E. B LODGETT,
Stove- Cover Holder.
N0. 89.,278.- Patented April 27, 1869.
JEHIAL E. BLODGETT, OF OSWEGO, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 89,278, dated April 27,1869; antedcted April 15,1869.
STOVE-COVER HOLDER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J EHIAL E. Brioncnrr, of Oswep o in the county of Oswego, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Device for Holding Stove-Covers, when they are not in use on the stove; and I do declare that tho followingis a full and exact description of the said invention.
The nature and principle of my invention consist in using small open spaces or crevices, so made between fixed hearing parts, that if the edge of a stove-cover be put into such space or crevice, and the cover be let down, it will cramp in the crevice or space, and thus be held fast, and nearly right side up, until lifted for use.
I usually make such stove-cover holder as follows, or substantially equivalent thereto:
It may be of iron, or any suitable material, with a back piece, A, of suitable length, width, and strength, to connect and support the desired number of shelf-like or fixed parts, as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, to give the required capacity to the cover-bolder, each of which fixed parts being about two or three inches wide at its back end, and
narrowed at the other, and projecting, about two or three inches in length, out nearly at right angles from such back piece A, may be either straight, or slightly curved,
' with each edge of each dropping a little lower than its centre, said fixedparts being placed farenough apart from each other to leave between each two of them an open space,'as 6, 7, 8, or 9, each of said open spaces being of size to easily admit the edge of one stove-cover, and let it just nicely pass back nearly or quite against the back piece A. Such cover will be securely held when it is so placed, and the outer or free edge of the cover is let down until the part of the cover in the space cramps or impinges against the fixed parts at the top and bomom of such space. The weight of the cover will keep it secure until its outer or free edge is again lifted in removing it for use. p
The points of contact against which the cover cramps or impingeain being held in the manner, or by the, principle aforesaid, I will herein denominate bearingplaces.
It is evident that this cover-holder may be used in a perpendicular or in a somewhat inclined position, and that the number of open spaces may be one or more, and that the bearing-places, against which the stovecover impinges as aforesaid, may be one or more against the top, and one or more against the bottom side of the cover being held, and that such bearing-places may be secured in place by any shaped fixed parts or frame, or device adapted thereto, and yet the stove-cover holder be substantially the same, so long as 'two or more bearing-places occupy and are held in theproper position to receive and, hold between them the stovecover, substantially as and by the principle aforesaid.
I attach this stove-cover holder by screws or otherwise to the stove or its pipe, or to any wall or fixture of the room, or any other suificient support convenient to the stove, or I make such cover-holder as a part of the castings of the stove on any convenient part or attachment thereof, where its use will not prevent the free use or action of any of the various parts of the stove. I make it a part of such castings by any addition to them, or any alteration thereof, whereby one or more suitable open spaces will be formed between bearingplaces, for holding stove-covers by the principle aforesaid.
I use my invention by placinga stove-cover, in manner as set forth, in call of the open spaces so made to receive one, (if there are so many covers to be held,) and if there are more covers than spaces for them, I place the remaining covers on top of the upper cover in the cover-holder.
The stove-handle will always be in place, and cool, if left in the last cover deposited.
I am aware that persons using stoves have always found, and do find places for stove-covers, sometimes scattering them, without order or regular place, whereevc'r there is a vacant spot, even be it in the oven, or' under the stove, but, perhaps,- the place designed, if any, as a regular place for piling them is the main hearth of the stove, that is often otherwise occupied, or, when needed to hold dishes, the stove-covers fill the hearth, and often lie upon the draught-slide, pre venting its use, or by getting in the way of and closing in part the draught-passage, and thus changing the supply of air, they render; the action of the stove unexpected aud imperfect. Thus dealt with, stove-covers, when not in use, have ever been an unmitigated nuisance.
The devices and expedients so resorted to, for disposing of stove-covers, are not of my invention, and I hereby disclaim them.
I further disclaim the use of one or more shelves, however made or arranged, upon which can be laid, broadly, the stove-cover to be held, also any and all devices whereby such stove-cover can be held by the use of bearing-places against its lower side only, and without a. bearing-place against its upper side being necessary to the holding, since my device acts only by the principle of cramping or impinging of each cover in a narrow open space, made too small to admit such cover more than half its diameter.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A stove-cover holder, designed to keep stove-covers whennot in use, and constructed with one or more narrow open spaces, each between fixed bearing-places, and operating in the manner as herein described.
Dated Oswego, New York, October 10, 1868.
