Description
PATENTED JAN. 30. 1906.
a. T. DALTON, s3. AUTOMATIC LOG-KING DEVICE FOR LOOSE LEAF BINDERS.
APPLICATION FILED MAR.16, 1905.
Wihwaom W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE T. DALTON, SR., OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR TO JOSEPH B. DALTON, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 30, 1906.
Application filed March 16, 1905. Serial No. 250,495.
: the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in means for automatically locking the sectional hinged covers of ledgers and record -'books, and comprises means whereby the locking means may be readily released when it is desired to remove the separable leaves of the book, and comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked. thereon, form a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a erspective view showing the book open an the hinged sections of the cover released to allow leaves to be removed or placed between the covers. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view showing the hinged sections being brought together to be locked automatically, and Fig. 3 is an end view of the device.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A A designate the covers of the book, which are connected together by a strip B, to which are fastened the two metallic concaved hinged sections D and D, which are pivotally connected by means of the pins E, one at each end of the book. The portion D of said section carries a pin F, upon whichis pivotally mounted a link K, having a flange K along one edge thereof, forming means whereby the link may be conveniently moved. The part D has an elongated slot d therein which terminates in an enlarged portion (1 at one end, in which a pin N, carried by the link K, is adapted to be seated when the two hinged parts are drawn together in the position shown in solid lines in Fig. 3 and in which position the parts will be locked until pressure is applied to the flange K, whereby the pin N may be released from the enlarged portion d and the two sections allowed to swing back in the position shown in Fi 3 of the drawings, in which positions the binding hooks J will be drawn apart and leaves may be added to or taken from the binder, as may be desired.
It will be observed that the slot (1 is so inclined with relation to the back to which the covers are connected that as the pin N is released from the enlarged portion d and the covers thrown back said pin will bear against the inclined edge of the slot and assist in throwing the two pivotal plates from each other.
Referring to Fig. 3 of the drawings will be seen a spring O, against which the free end of the link is adapted to contact as the two sections of the book are swung together and which spring serves to hold the pin N in the recess (1, said spring yielding, however, when pressure is applied to the link, whereby the sections of the book may be swung open.
While I have shown a particular detailed form of device illustrating my invention, .it
will be understood that I may vary the same as to details, if desired, without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim'as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A locking device for sectional backs for books comprising, in combination with the hinged plates of the back, one of said plates provided with a slot with an enlarged portion a link pivotally connected to one of said plates, a projection upon said link adapted to travel in a slot in the other of said plates, and means for holding said pin in an enlarged portion of said slot, as set forth.
2. In combination with the hinged plates of the back of a book, one of said plates having an elongated slot terminating in an enlarged portion, a link pivoted to the other plate and provided with alongitudinal flange,
a pin carried by said link and guided in said slot, and means for holding said pin in the enlarged portion of said slot, as set forth.
3. In combination with the bin ed plates of the back of a book, one of said p ates having an elongated slot terminating in an enlarged portion, a link pivoted to the other plate and provided with a longitudinal flange, a pin carried by said link and guided in said slot, and a spring secured adjacent to said slot and adapted to hold said pin in said enlarged portion of the slot, as set forth.
4. In combination with the hinged plates of the back of a book, one of said plates being provided with an inclined slot having an enlarged portion at one end, a link pivoted to the other plate and provided with a longitudinal flange, a pin carried by said link and mounted in said slot and designed to bear frictionally against the marginal edge of the I 5 slot to assist in throwing the plates in opposite directions, and a spring secured adjacent to said slot and designed to hold said pin in the enlarged portion of the slot, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afliX my 20 signature in presence of two Witnesses.
