SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. '72'7,028,da.ted May 5, 1903.
Application filed October 22, 1902. Serial No. 128,297. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES XV. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at East St. Louis, in the county of St. Clair and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cornice-Jacks; and I do declare'the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a cornice-jack; and it consistsin the novel arrangement, construction, and combination of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed. 7
The object of this invention is to construct a device which is to be suspended from the cornice bya cornice-hook to be used for supporting workmen in placing, repairing, and painting cornices.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my complete invention in position on a building. Fig.2 is a side elevation of the upper part of my invention. Fig. 3 is a front View of'the same. Fig. at is a detail perspective view of the supporting-brace made useof in carrying out my invention.
In the construction of the device as shown I provide side pieces 5, to which are connected the steps 6 and top board 7. To the sides are secured metal yokes 8. r
Beneath the top board 7 and passing through openings formed in the yokes 8 is a bolt 9, having on one end a head and on the other a thumb-nut 10. By this bolt 9 the device is suspended to a cornice-hook 11 by passing through an eye 12, formed on the lower end thereof. The hook when applied is first passed through an opening 13, formed in the top board for the purpose of keeping the hook in the center of the jack.
Tothe lower ends of the side pieces are secured brace-arms 14., one of which is connected by a hinge to a cross-strip 15 and'the other by means of a mortise and tenon and held secure by the hook and eye 16. The purpose of this brace is to keep the jack at an incline and is provided with the hinge and hook and eye for folding the same together while moving the same from one structure to another. The brace is held in extended position by means of the blocks 17, located on the sides above the arms 14.
A shelf 18 is also provided upon which the workman may-place his tools or paint-bucket.
This device can be suspended from a roof of any construction and is far more convenient than a ladder extending from the ground.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is A device of the class named, comprising a ladder an openingformed in the top board of said ladder, supporting-yokes placed onthe sides of said ladder, a cornice-hook inserted through the opening and supported to the ladder, a bolt passing through said yokes and end of the cornice-hook, a folding bracket carried by the ladder for retaining theladder in an inclined position, substantially as specified.
