Description

No. 675,254. Patented May 28, l90l. B. E. TAKKEN.
COMBINATION PUNCH AND SHEARS.
[Application filed Oct. 24, 1900.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BLACKSMITH E. TAKKEN, OF HOLLAND, MICHIGAN.
COMBINATION PUNCH AND SHEARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 675,254, dated May 28, 1901.
Application filed October 24, 1900. Serial No. 34,228. (No model.)
To on whom it may concern:
Be itknown that LBLAoKsMIrH E. TAKKEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holland, in the county of Ottawa and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combination Punch and Shears, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in combined metal punches and shears; and its primary object is to provide a device of simple and durable construction which is effective in use and which may employ punches of various sizes.
To this end the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete device, showing parts thereof in section; and Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the punch-engaging block.
Referring to the drawings by numerals of reference, 1 is a base having an overhanging standard 2, within which is slidably mounted a vertical punch 3. This punch is in vertical alinement with the center of a recess 4, formed in the base 1, said recess being countersunk for the reception of the receiving-die 5. The upper end of the punch is provided with a stem. 6, at the end of which is a ball 7. This ball and stem are adapted to be inserted into a keyhole-slot 8, formed within a sliding block 9, the reduced portion of the slot'preventing the withdrawal of the ball. The block 9 is slidably mounted upon a lever 10, which is connected by a link 11 to the base 1. The free end of the lever is reduced,. as at 12, for engagement with a yoke 13, swiveled to one end of a turnbuckle 14, the opposite end thereof being pivoted in a slot 15, formed in one section ofan L-shaped lever 16. This lever is pivoted to the base, and the upper portion thereof is adapted to be held normally upright by a hook 17, secured to lever 10 and adapted to engage lever 16.
Recesses 18 are formed in the top of the base 1 for the reception of studs 19, extending from the bottom of one member 20 of the cutting-shears. This member is secured to the second member 21 by links 22, arranged at opposite sides thereof, and a pin 23, placed between the adjacent ends. The member 21 is pivoted .to lever 10, and both members are provided with cutting-plates 24, as shown.
When it is desired to operate the device, the hook 17 is released from lever 16 and said lever swung downward. This will cause the cutting-plates 24 to shear any material therebetween, and at the same time the punch will be forced downward. As the punch has a ball end 7, the block 9 is free to rock thereon. If desired, the shears can be removed by withdrawing the pivot-pin 25 and lifting the member 20 from the base 1.
Punches of various sizes can be used, and for this purpose the adjustable rod or turnbuckle 14 is provided.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
1. The combination with a base and a standard thereon, of a punch within the standard, a lever, a link connection between the base and lever, a sliding block upon the lever having a slot therein, a ball end to the punch within the slot, a lever pivoted to the base, a turnbuckle connecting the lever of the block and the base-lever, a shear member, lugs thereto within the base, a second member pivoted at its opposite ends to the lever of the sliding block and to the remaining member, and cutting-plates upon the members of the shears.
2. The combination with a base having sockets therein and a standard; of a punch mounted within the standard, a lever, a sliding block thereon engaging the punch, a link connection between the lever and the base, a In testimony whereof I affix my signature shear n1ember,lngs thereto detaehahly mountin presence of two witnesses.
ed within the sockets of the base, a second I v n 7 member to the shears pivoted at its opposite BLACkSMHH TAKIXEN' ends to the lever of the sliding block and to Witnesses:
the shears 0f the lugs, and means for operat- ROY E. NIES,
ing the punch and shears in unison. .TOHN NIES.
