BALL-COCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 670,818, dated March 26, 1901.
Application filed October 10, 1900. Serial No. 82,645. \No model.)
To all whom 711% may concern.-
Beit known that 1. JAMES M.SMITH,a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Olneyville, in the city of Providence, State of Rhode Island, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Ball-(Jocks, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved ball cock as applied to a watertank, which is shown in longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is an enlarged central vertical section of the ball-cock. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the ballcock with the cap removed. Fig. 5 is an edge view of the cap.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the different figures of the drawings.
My improved ball-cock is designed to stand in a vertical position within a tank which holds the supply of water, saidtank being provided with a suitable discharge-pipe p and lifting-valve p.
The invention consists in the combination of a tubular-shaped standard having an enlarged middle portion inclosing a circular chamber or water-passage which is divided by a partition from the inlet or water-passage, said partition provided with a circular opening having an annular flange forming a valve-seat, said valve-seat having its axis in alinement with the axis of said standard, a discharge-pipe secured to the said enlarged portion of the standard and communicating with the chamber or water-passage thereof, a valve-plug mounted in the standard, and a cam mounted in the standard and adapted to bear against the said plug in closing the valve upon its seat, with means for holding said cam in place within the standard and providing a ready adjustment for the replacing of a valve-disk, as hereinafter described and claimed.
A represents a standard of a tubular form, having an enlarged middle portion b inclos' ing a circular chamber or water-passage c. A partition d divides said chamber from the inlet or water-passage e, and said partition is provided with a central circular opening f, having an annular valve-seat f, against which the circular valve-disk g rests in closing the said opening.
(t represents the discharge-pipe, having an exterior screw-thread to engage in the screwthreaded opening made in the side of the enlarged portion 1) of the standard.
The valve-disk g is made secure upon the end of the cylindrical-shaped plug 13, which fits loosely within the upper portion of the standard by a screw h.
C is a cam which is situated at the upper end of the standard and is designed to bear against the plug B in closing the valve-disk upon its seat, said cam having trunnions M movable in vertical slots j j, formed in the circular wall of the standard, one of said trunnions having a hub integral therewith and provided with an interior screwthreaded aperture, the axial center of which is at a right angle to the axial center of the cam-trunnions.
D is the ball or float of the usual construction, having a rod connection Z, provided with an exterior screw-thread at one end to engage with the screw-threaded aperture in the hubJc.
E is a cap which is mounted upon the end of the standard to hold the cam within the same, said cap having an ear m, provided with a circular opening centrally located, with a screw-threaded opening made in the ear n, integral with the standard. This cap is secured to the ear of the standard by the thumbscrew 0. Integral with the cap and diagonally opposite the thumb-screw 0 a spurp turns downwardly and beneath a projecting horn q, integral with the standard. This construction of a cap not only holds the cam within the standard, but also facilitates the ready removal of the plug B to replace a new valve-disk. The thumb-screw as it is turned loose a trifle allows the cap to be swung around to the dotted position, as indicated in Fig. 3, after which the cam and its float connection are lifted out, and by means of a rod having a hook-shaped end to catch in the opening 1" the plug is readily removed.
The standard A has an exterior annular flange s, forming a base-plate, which rests upon a packing-ring t, surrounding the body of the standard. The lower portion of the standard projects through from the bottom of the tank T and is provided with an exterior screw-thread to engage the screw-threaded end of the supply-pipe o, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. A check-nut w, interposed between the supply-pipe and the tank, compresses the packing-ring t and secures the standard firmly in position.
The operation of myinvention is as follows: Assuming the parts to be in position as illustrated in Fig. 1 and the Water at its highest level in the tank, when the valve 29" is lifted by the pull-chain the Water as it discharges through the pipe p will carry downward the float and by its connection with the cam G will swing the same to the position shown in dotted lines. Simultaneously with this movement the pressure of Water in the supplypipe '0 will raise the valve 9 from its seat and the Water Will pass from the chamber a and through the small discharge pipe a to the tank. When the valve 10" is closed, the water Will continue to flow through the discharge a until it reaches its normal level in the tank, when the cam C will have forced the valve 9 upon its seat and shut off the sup: ply.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a ball-cock, the combination of the t1i-' bular-shaped standard A provided with water-passages c and e, respectively, a dischargepipe secured to the standard and communicating with the aforesaid Water-passage c, said water-passages divided by a partition 01 provided with a circular opening having an annular valve-seat, the plug B loosely fitting in the standard and having a valve-disk secured at one end thereof, the cap E mounted upon the standard and secured by the thumb-screw 0, said cap having a downwardly-bent spur p to catch beneath a projecting horn q integral with the standard, the cam O mounted in the standard and interposed between said cap and said plug, said cam adapted to operate through its connection with the float in closing the valve upon its seat, as shown and described.
Signed by me at Providence, Rhode Island, this 9th day of October, 1900.
JAMES M. SMITH.
