To a/ZZ wir/011i, t may concer-ift:
Be it known that I, CANDIDE KIN GSLEY, a subject of Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain, residing at the city and district of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ratchet-Wrenches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to ratchet-wrenches, and one object is to provide a ratchet-wrench which is especially adapted tothe work of tightening the truss-rods of railroad-cars.
Afurther object is to provide a ratchetwrench which is simple in construction, effective in operation, andfwhich can be manufactured at a moderate cost.
To these ends the invention consists i'n a ratchet-wrench constructed substantially as' herein illustrated and described, and delined in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure l is a view in perspective of a ratchetwrench constructed in vaccordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the wrench-head, the top being detached and the parts being in their closed position. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of the wrench-head in its open position. Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of the wrench-lever, the parts being in their open position. Fig. 5 is aperspective view of a detail. Fig. 6 is a view in perspective of a turnbuckle to which the wrench is particularly adapted. Fig. 7 is a view showing a detached detail of construction.
In the drawings, A represents the wrenchhandle, the body portion of which is preferably constructed of metal, while the part grasped by the hand may be of wood.' The end of the handle is provided with a suitable socket, within which is seated a spring-pressed pin, which does not show in the drawings, but
which is usual in wrenches of this character, and therefore does not need detailed illustration. This pin serves to retain the ratchetpawl CL, which is pivoted between the ears a', fixed upon the end of the handle, in its adj ustedposition to either direction.
rotate the wrench-head in Secured upon each side of the end of the handle is a curved bracket o?, which is offset from the handle, forming a space in which the endsof the pivoted arms B are received and guided. The arms B are four in number, two. of which are pivotally secured at b to the earso on each side of the end of the handle, forming a space for the reception of the wrench-head. The outer ends of the arms B are formed semicircular, so that when closed they form an annular ring on each side of the handle, which are adapted to embrace a retaining flange or collar d, formed upon each face of the wrench-head D.
A lever E, having a handle e at one end, while the other end is bifurcated so as to embrace the arms B, is pivotallr connected to one of each pair of the arms B, as is clearly shown in Fig. 4. Adjacent to the pivot-point the lever E is provided with a curved slot e' in each side thereof, which slots receive and guide a pin e2, iixed upon each of the other pivoted arms B. By means of this construcltion it will be obvious that as the lever E is operated the arms B will be opened or closed. At a convenient point lon the leverE is a lug e3, having a hook end which is adaptedvto be engaged by a spring-catch E', mounted upon the handle A, whereby the lever E may be securely held in its closed position.
The wrench-head D is circular in shape and is provided upon its periphery with ratchetteeth d', which are adapted to be engaged by the pawl a. The wrenchhead is rotatably semeans of the collar d and is adapted to be rotated in either direction by means of the pawl a engaging the ratchet-teeth d. The wrenchhead is constructed of two similar sections connected together by means of a suitable hinge-joint cl2, by which means the sections may be opened to receive the turnbuckle F -or other article to be turned. A suitable spring-catch d3 is secured in one of the sections of the wrench-head D, and its hook end is adapted to engage a suitable notch formed in the other section of the wrench head, whereby the two sections may be locked together upon the turnbuckle F. A suitable cam-disk d4 is rotatably mounted in one` of the sections of the wrench-head and is provided with an operating-handle d5, seated in a recess in said section in a convenient posicured between the arms B of the handle by IOS tion to be operated by the fingers. When the spring-catch d3 is in engagement with the notch, the cam-disk is turned until the cam bears against the side of the catch, thus securely locking the two sections together.
A guideway G is formed centrally in each vsection of the wrench-head, in which is slidably mounted the adjustable jaws G', ha'ving the projecting lugs g, which are adapted to engage the slot f of the turnbuckle F. A suitable adj listing-screw g', havin g an operating-head g2, which projects through openings in the wrench-head, is threaded in the end of the jaws G', whereby the said jaws may be adjusted back and forth in the guideway G. The operation of the improved Wrench is believed to be sufficiently obvious in view 'of the above description without further detailed description.
lVhile I have herein shown a preferred form of carrying my invention into effect, yet I do not desire to limit myself to such preferred details of construction, but claim the right to use any and all modiiications thereof which will serve to carry into effect the objects to be attained by this invention in so far as such modifications and changes may fall within the spirit and scope of my said invention.
l. A ratchet-wrench, comprising a handle; two sets of spaced arms pivotal'ly supported upon said handle; a lever pivotally secured to one set of said arms and operatively connected with the other set of said arms; a wrench-head rotatably secured between said arms; and means for rotating said wrenchhead in either direction, substantially as described.
2. A ratchet-wrench, comprising a handle; a wrench-head rotatably secured upon said handle; means for rotating said wrench-head in either direction; said wrench-head being constructed in two sections connected together by a hinge-joint adjustable grippingjaws mounted in said wrench-head a springcatch carried by one of said sections and adapted to engage a notch in the other of said sections; and a cam-disk mounted in said wrench-head adjacent to said catch, whereby the catch is held in its locked position, substantially as described.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
CANDIDE KIN GSIJEY.
