JOHN P. TARR, OF AUGUSTA, ILLINOIS.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 643,559, dated February 13, 1900.
Application filed November 23,1899. Serial No. 738,082. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN P. TARR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Augusta, in the county of Hancock and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to gates.
The object of the invention is to provide a gate which may be easily and quickly opened and closed by a person on horseback or within a carriage and which when in position will remain so until operated by its hand-levers.
To this end the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved gate, showing it closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing it open. Fig. 3 is a top plan view.
In the drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
1 denotes the hinge-post, 2 the fence-post, and 3 the lever-post.
4 denotes the gate, hinged to the hinge-post and provided with a laterally-extending arm 4: suitably braced by bars 5.
6 denotes a weighted lever pivoted at one end to the lever-post 3 and having its other end weighted and moving vertically between guide-bars 7, secured to the hinge-post.
8 denotes a link the ends of which are loosely pivoted, one to the weighted lever and the other to the laterally-projecting arm of the gate.
9 denotes levers pivoted between their length, one to the lever-post 3 and the other to the hinge-post 1, and provided at their outer ends with operating cords or chains 10. The inner ends of these levers are connected to the weighted lever between its ends by links 11.
Assuming the gate to be closed, by drawing upon one of the cords 10 the weighted lever will be elevated and will draw the gate from the fence-post until the link 8 assumes a vertical position and until it has passed its deadcenter, when the weight will exert its force to swing the gate farther open until it is parallel with aline drawn through the lever-post connection with the accompanying drawings,
the construction, operation, and advantages of my improved gate will be readily apparent without requiring an extended explanation;
It will be seen that the'gate is simple, that its construction permits of its manufacture at small cost, and that it is exceedingly well adapted for the purpose for which it is designed,'and it will of course be understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claim ed,and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a hinge-post and a lever-post, of a gate hinged to the posts and provided with a laterally-extending braced arm, a weighted lever pivoted to the leverpost at one end, and having its other end working between guide-bars secured to the hinge-post, a link loosely pivoted to the latorally-projecting arm of the gate and to the weighted lever, operating-levers pivoted between their ends to the said posts, links pivoted to the inner ends of the operating-levers and to the weighted lever between its ends, and cords secured to the outer ends of said operating-levers, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN P. TARR.
