UNITED STATES PATENT @rrrcra I IsAAc GRIFFITH, or BASIN, MONTANA.
CLEVIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 620,914, dated March 14, 1899.
Application filed January 17, 1899. Serial No. 702,388. (No model.)
To (I/ZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISAAC GRIFFITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Basin, in the county of Jefferson and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Olevises, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to clevises; and the object thereof is to provide a device of this class with an improved key or keeper by which the connecting-bolt may be clevis.
The invention is fully disclosed in the folnent are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in said drawings I haveshown at 5 an ordinary clevis provided with a locking-bolt 6,which is passed through the ends of the sides of the clevis.
The bolt 6 is provided at one end with the usual head 7, and that portion of the bolt 6 adjacent to the head 7 and designated by the reference-numeral 8 is angular in cross-section, and the hole 9 in the side of the clevis through which the bolt passes is similar in form in cross-section. The opposite end of the bolt 6 projects through the opposite side of the clevis and beyond the same, as shown at 10, and the side of the clevis is provided with a cylindrical enlargement 11, having a central chamber 12 of similar form and adapted to receive the end projection 10 of the bolt 6. 1
A slide or clamp 13 is mounted on the side of the clevis adjacent to the extension 11, and said slide or clamp is open at its outer side, as shown at 14:, and provided with downwardly-directed depending spring-arms 15, having at their lower ends outwardly and inwardly directed jaws 16, and the cylindrical extension 11 on the side of the clevis is provided with top andbottom openings 17, through which said spring-arms are adapted secured in the to pass, and the projection 10 of the bolt 6 is provided with a similar transverse opening 18, through which said spring-arms are also adapted to pass, and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.
The smallest transverse diameter of the angular portion 8 of the bolt 6 is equal to the greatest diameter of the cylindrical portion of said 'bolt, and the object of the angular portion 8 is to prevent the turning of the bolt in the clevis and also hold the bolt so that the spring-arms 15 may pass therethrough, it being understood that in one position of the bolt the key cannot be applied. The slide or clamp 13 is raised on the side of the clevis on which it is mounted and the bolt is passed through the side of the clevis, as shown in Fig. 1, and the said slide or clamp is then moved downwardly and the spring-arms 15 pass through the cylindrical extension 11 and through the projection 10, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the object of the jaws 16 at the lower ends of said spring-arms is to provide friction which will hold the clamp or slide normally in the position shown in the drawings.
This device is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to 'accomplish the result for which it is intended, and is also comparatively inexpensive, and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent- 1. A clevis provided with the usual lockingbolt which is passed through the ends of the sides thereof, and which is provided at one end with a head, and the opposite end of which projects through the corresponding side of the clevis, and a slide or clamp mounted on and adapted to slide on said side of the clevis and provided with spring-arms which are adapted to pass through a transverse opening formed-in the end of said bolt,
bolt, one end of which projects through one side thereof and is provided with a transverse opening, and a slide or clamp mounted on the side of the clevis and provided with arms which are adapted to pass through said opening, substantially as shown and described.
3. A clevis provided with the usual lockingbolt which is passed through the ends of the sides thereof, the end of the bolt adjacent to the head being angular in cross-section, and the corresponding opening in the side of the clevis being of similar form, the opposite end of the bolt being also provided with a transverse opening, and a slide or clamp mounted on the corresponding side of the clevis and provided with spring-arms which are adapted to pass through said opening, substantially as shown and described.
4. A clevis provided with the usual lockingbolt which is passed through the sides thereof, one side of said clevis being provided with a cylindrical extension having a chamber or recess adapted to receive the end of the bolt, said extension and said end of the bolt being provided with transverse openings, and a slide mounted on the corresponding side of the clevis and provided with spring-arms which are adapted to pass through said openings, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 9th day of January, 1899.
ISAAC GRIFFITH.
