COMBINED CARPENTERS BENCH PIN, GUIDE, ANDKNlFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters .Patent No. 521,234, dated June 12, 1894. Application filed August 28, 1893- Serial No. 484,168. (No model.)
in gs, an d to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a combined carpenters bench pin, guide and knife, and it consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the front end of a carpenters bench showing the bench vise and the stay pin bracket in position. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of a portion of Fig. 1.- Figs. 3,4 and 5 are respectz 5 ively a side elevation, a rear view and front view enlarged of my improved stay pin bracket, and Fig. 6 is an enlarged transverse section of a portion of said stay pin bracket.
In thedrawings a represents a carpenters bench, b the bench vise and c a forward stationary stop arranged in thetop'of the bench in the usual manner.
In the place of the usual stationary rear pins, I have invented a removable stay pin bracket d, consisting of two portions 6 and f arranged at right angles to each other. The longer portion e, which 'rests against the side of the bench, is slotted asat e. In this slot 6' moves the bolt h provided with a square or otherwise enlarged head h, adapted to confine the bolt h in the v groove or slot 6. Secured on the bolt h, if desired, by a nut h is placed a spool or annular collar g, and on the end of the said bolt a bracket or guide 71 for the purpose hereinafter described. The portion f of the stay pin bracket dis parallel with the top of the bench at and is provided with one or more pins in adapted to secure the bracket cl firmly to the bench, when the por- 50 tion f is driven down on the top of the same.
In the portion f may also be drilled a countersunk or other hole f through which a screw or nail may be passed in order to more firmly secure the bracket d to the bench. At the end of the portion fis pivotally secured as at m a bench knife Z. The lower end of the slot 6 terminates in a recess e of a size suffi-' cient to allow the removal of the bolt h and its head h.
In operation, when the work to be done consists in planing for instance the edge of a board 8, the bracket d is fastened to the bench at a proper distance from the end thereof, and the board is confined within the vise and between the portion 6 of the bracket and the guide or bracket 71 at the end of the bolt h. The lower edge of the board is supported on the spool gwhich is adjusted withits bolt h in the slot 6' of the bracket until it is the required distance below the face of the bench. The spool g is of a width corresponding to the thickness of the board 3 and it is manifest that the carpenter may have spools and bolts of any size required, which may be easily placed in the slot e or removed therefrom by passing the head 71. of the bolt through the enlargement e at the end of the slot e. Where the work to be done consists in planin g the face of the board, one end of the board is placed against the stationary stop 0 (see Fig. 2). The bracket (1 is then secured to the bench at the required distance so that it just clears the other end of the board. The bench knife I is then pressed into the work and the board is thereby firmly secured to the bench.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An adjustable and removable stay pin bracket for carpenters benches, consisting of a slotted angle bracket provided with pins on one arm adapted to enter the face of the bench to support and secure the bracket thereon and a support adapted to be raised or lowered in the slot of said bracket along the side of the bench, and with a bench knife pivotally secured to the arm of the bracket which is secured to the face of the bench substantially as described.
2. In a carpenters bench an adjustable and removable stay pinbracket consisting of two portions at right angles to each other, one
portion being parallel to the face of the bench and provided. with pins adapted to secure said bracket to the face of the bench and also carrying a bench knife which is pivotally secured thereto while the other is parallel to the side of the bench and slotted to receive a removable supporting spool adapted to be adjusted therein, substantially as described.
3. The combination in the bracket d, of the slotted portion e and portion f, with the bolt h, spool g and lugz' slidingin the slotted portion e, and with the pins 7t and bench knife 1 secured to the portion f, substantially as described.
