MULTlCHARGE-GUN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,011, dated October 11, 1892. Application filed April 9, 1890. Renewed June 15, 1891- Again renewed March 9, 1892. Serial No. 424,271. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES R. HASKELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Passaic, in the county of Passaic and State of New J ersey,have invented certain new and useful ImprovementsinMulticharge-Guns, of which the following is a description in such full, clear, and exact terms as to enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists of certain novel parts and combinations of parts composing an improved multicharge-gun.
The following is a description of the accompanying drawings, which show one of the forms in which my invention may be advantageously applied. It will, however, be understood that. my invention is not limited to the precise forms herein illustrated or described, as various modifications may be employed without departing from its general principle or the scope of the claim concluding this specification, in which the features of novelty separately are pointed out.
Referring to said drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the breech of an ordinary breech-loading gun, taken on the line of its axis and showing, also, the machinery for supporting and withdrawing the breech-pin, which is of the ordinary variety now in common use and to which, therefore, no further reference will be necessary. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken through a multicharge-gun on the line of its axis, said gun being composed of longitudinal sections, the several sections being screwed together to form the gun as a whole.
A multicharge-gun having separate charge chambers or pockets set one ahead of the other on its side and on planes diagonal to its bore, into which they are made to discharge, is old; but the plan here illustrated of making the gun of a series of separate sections containing supplemental charge-chambers united one ahead of theother is new.
The gun maybe made of any suitable metal, and by making it in sections it is possible to obtain a solid casting or forging of which to make the several sections, and the several castin gs or forgin gs are easily handled, turned, and bored to form the several sections composing the gun. The bore of the gun is shown by A and the several sections composing it by B B and the supplemental charge-chambers by C C. The breech-section (shown by Fig. 1) is made upon an enlarged scale the better to illustrate the several parts of. the breech-fittings. These sections are united together by screws, as shown, or by any other means now Well known in the arts for uniting two or more sections of metal. The breechpin D of each supplemental charge-chamber may be made and operated the same as the pin of the main breech, and all the breechpins or stops may be fitted with inyimproved gas-check, fully described in a pending application.
In the foregoing specification I have described a good practical method of making and applying myimprovements; but I desire it to be distinctly understood that there are many modifications which may be made in its construction and application without depart ing from the general principles embodied in the drawings and described in the specification. The point of the invention is the making of this form of multicharge-gun in sections screwed together longitudinally. This method of making the gun is of great advantage, as it has been found to be a very difficult and expensive work to make a multicharge-gun with supplemental charges on the sides of the gun of one piece of metal long enough to make an eificient multicharge-gun.
Having now described my improvements, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A multicharge-gun consisting of thecombination of a plurality of separate sections united together longitudinally to form the gun, each section in advance of the breechsection being fitted with a supplemental charge-chamber suitable for containing and firing explosives and arranged to discharge successively into the bore of the gun at dif* ferent points upon the advancing projectile.
