Definitions
- my invention consists in providing the mop-cloth with two handles, and so connecting them with a hinge or swingbrace that as the mop-cloth is drawn into a wringing position the handles shall be separated by the swing-brace, to allow the crosspiece which holds one end of the cloth to turn round withoutcomingin contact with the other handle, which would otherwise be the case.
- the handle A maybe drawn up the whole length ofthe cloth, as shown in Figs. l and 2, and the cloth G wrung by turning round thehandle A, as shown in Fig. 3, after which the cloth can be untwisted and the handle A pushed down in the position for mopping, as shown in Fig. 4, being secured in said position by the spring g closing into the notch in the band F, as shown in Fig. 4.

Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. TOLHURST, OF OIRCLEVILLE, OHIO.
IMPROVED MOP.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent NO. 46,406, dated February 14, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE W. ToLHURsT, of the city of Oircleville, in the county ofPickaway and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Wringing-Mop; and [do hereby decla-re that the following` is a full and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in providing the mop-cloth with two handles, and so connecting them with a hinge or swingbrace that as the mop-cloth is drawn into a wringing position the handles shall be separated by the swing-brace, to allow the crosspiece which holds one end of the cloth to turn round withoutcomingin contact with the other handle, which would otherwise be the case.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my mops with two handles, as shown at A and A' in the accompanying drawings. At the lower end of said handles is secured a cross-piece, (marked B and B' to which the cloth is attached-that part of the drawings marked VO being the cloth previously referred to. To the handle A', ata place marked D, is attached (so as to swing up and down) a wirebrace. (Marked D'.) Said brace, after being passed through the handle A' at D, is bent so as to forni a clamp havingits extreme ends bent atv right angles toward the handle, as shown at d d, Fig. 1, the said ends at this place forminga jointwith the ring E by being sprung into a hole made in each side of said ring, as shown in Fig. l. The ring E is kept in position by means of thepins c c. Itiveted on the end or near the end ot' the handle A' is a band, (marked F,) which passes round the handle A, so as to allow said handle to rotate or slide a given distance in said band, the sliding distance being` limited by the pins f, Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4. By this arrangement the handle A maybe drawn up the whole length ofthe cloth, as shown in Figs. l and 2, and the cloth G wrung by turning round thehandle A, as shown in Fig. 3, after which the cloth can be untwisted and the handle A pushed down in the position for mopping, as shown in Fig. 4, being secured in said position by the spring g closing into the notch in the band F, as shown in Fig. 4.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the handles A A', crosspieces B B', and brace D, substantially as specified.
GEO. IV. TOLHURST.
