To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, THEODORE PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shot for Exercising, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has relation to improvements in the construction of shot for gymnastic exercises and used in the exercise known as putting the shot. Ordinarily this has consisted of a smooth metallic sphere, usually of iron of the desired size and weight; but this was found objectionable, because by reason of its hardness it could not be used in halls without damage to walls and furniture, and also because being once propelled its initial velocity carried it far beyond the end of its trajectory. Efforts have been made to overcome these objections by constructing a shot consisting of a canvas bag containing a mass of ordinary gunshot surrounded with a layer of felt and covered with leather; but this latter form of construction is also objectionable, because it does not retain the desired accurate spherical shape. The seams in the cover interfere with the requisite smoothness of surface, while by constant use the lines of union of the different coverings become loosened and permit the escape of fine particles of lead produced by the constant attrition of the shot, to the injury of the user.

The objects of my invention are to provide as a new and improved article of manufacture a shot which shall avoid the objections to the two forms of construction hereinbefore detailed, while it retains the desirable elements of eachviz., smoothness and sphericity of exterior, elasticity of surface, and internal moving particles to retard it against rolling after it reaches the end of its trajectcry.

To the aforesaid objects it consists in the new and peculiar construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and then specifically pointed out in the claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.

The accompanying drawing represents a central vertical section of my improved shot, which consists of a hollow sphere of vulcanized rubber having its internal cavity nearly filled with ordinary gunshot.

The sphere A is of any desired size, but preferably about five and one-half inches in diameter, and is made of pure Para gum, with the least amount of other ingredients that will permit it to be vulcanized, and of sufficient thickness to retain its spherical shape except at the moment of impact. IVithin this sphere is placed a quantity of lead shot B of any preferred gage in such amount as to nearly fill the internal space and give to the sphere the desired Weight and is securely sealed therein. The shot thus prepared is smooth on the exterior, spherical in shape,

sufliciently elastic to avoid injury to walls or furniture which it encounters, and the loose shot on its interior will prevent its rolling.

I claim as my invention- As an improved article of manufacture, a shot for gymnastic exercises, consisting of a hollow sphere of vulcanized rubber containing in its cavity a quantity of gunshot or equivalent movable particles, substantially as shown and described.
