Be it known that I, CHARLES PORTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Worth,in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brackets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specificatiom'and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

This invent-ion has for its object to, provide a simple, cheap, durable, and efficient' bracket for supporting a shelf or for other purposes, which shall also comprise a towelrack and a hook or hooks for clothes or other articles. The whole is foldable in close contact with the shelf, so as to occupy but little space for shipment or storage.

The novelty resides in the peculiarities of construction, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

.The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improvement extended and supporting the shelf. Fig. 2 is a like view with the parts folded.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts in both views.

Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a shelf or other support, to the under side of which are secured one or more brackets B, in the present instance two being shown, but more may sometimes be employed. Each bracket consists of bent to form a horizontal portion or arm a, which is held to the under side of the part A by staples b in such a manner as to allow the bracket to be folded against the shelf A, as seen in Fig. 2, when desired. The wire forming the bracket is then bent to form an inclined arm or brace c, and thence upward to form the vertical arm (Z, which is joined by the depending arm e of the horizontal arm a, the two being secured together at their junction in any suitable manner either by solder or otherwise. The two portions being bent upon themselves at this point form a strong joint. The upper end of the vertical arm is curved downward, as seen at f, and thence extended to the inclined brace-arm, to which it is secured in any suitable way by solder or otherwise. This constitutes a very strong and light bracket.

In the drawings I have shown two of these brackets, one near each end of. the shelf, and the two constructed and arranged to fold toward each other against the under side of the shelf.

B is a wire arranged lengthwise of the shelf upon the under side thereof, near the front edge,beingforined with horizontal portions g, one near each end, which are held to the shelf by staples It, so as to allow it to fold against the shelf when desired, as seen in Fig. 2. From the said horizontal portion the wire is bent to form the arm 't',with a loop or bend j, and upon the outside or outer ends with a hook it. Vhen the parts are extended, the said loops orbends receive the inclined bracearms of the brackets near their junction with the horizontal arms and serve to hold the parts in the position shown in Fig. 1 and strengthen the brackets. The hooks at the outer ends of the wire I) serve as convenient means for hanging towels, sponges, or other articles, and the main portion of the said wire, which stands at a distance from the under side of the shelf, also forms a support for towels and other articles.

Upon the under side of the shelf, to the rear of the wire B, is held a shorter wire 0 by staples Z, so as to fold against the shelf, and provided at its ends with hooks m, as seen in Fig. 1.

The improvement may be readily applied to shelves now in use and supported in other ways. The hooks or loops M on the ends of the depending portions of the horizontal arms of the brackets serve as means for securing the brackets to their support by screws or other means.

Vhat I claim as new is 1. The combination, with the hinged brackets, of the hinged wire B, hinged to swing at having horizontal portions hinged to the under side of the shelf and formed with bends to receive the inclined portions of the brackets and at its ends with hooks, substantially as specified.
