Patented Mar. 3,1891;

vNrrnn STATES ATENT TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,411, dated March 3, 1891.
Application filed September 25, 1890. Serial No- 366,150. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern.-
lle it known that I, JOSEPH M. MCMASTER, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Toys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the drawings accompanying this specification.
My invention is a new device or improvement in parlor-billiards.
In the invention two half-boxes are used as pockets, each having an opening in front. Three marbles are placed at stated distances in advance of the boxes. A one provided with a double elastic cord, string, or thread and having a rubber ball strung thereon is used as a shooting device. The game consists in shooting against the marbles and driving them through the openings into the boxes.
The invention consists in the devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the two half boxes or pockets placed side by side with the openings downward and the marbles placed in position in advance of the boxes. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the cue, the rubber ball being drawn back and set in position for shooting. Fig. 3 is a diagram showing a sectional elevation of the devices shown in Fig. 1. Figs is a side elevation of the one in position for shooting at the marbles in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a plan View of the cue. Fig. 6 is a vertical section of the box when closed.
A A indicate the two half boxes or poo-kets, each being provided with an opening or arch a, which, when the sections are separated and placed side by side, as shown in Fig. 1, stand downward and are in position to allow the marbles to be forced through the arch to the interior of the boxes or pockets. When not in use, these half-boxes are placed one within the other, as shown in Fig. 6, forming a closed cube-shaped receptacle in which the marbles are kept ready for use.
B B B indicate the marbles, which, when the game is played, are placed in advance of ball E strung thereon,the cordpassing through a hole in the ball. The ball is preferably of about the same size as one of the marbles. The cue, elastic cord, and ball form the shooting device or gun.
In use the rubber ballE is drawn back over the base end of the cue, where it rests and retains its place, owing to the tension of the cord, as shown in Figs. 2, 4, and 5. It will keep its place as long as desired. Aim is taken at one of the marbles, as shown in Fig. 4, and the shooting is done by slipping the ball over the end of the cue. It is found in practice that accurate shooting can be done. The game consists in driving the marbles through the openings into the box. One alone counts one. If the ball strikes one and that drives in another, it counts two. If two balls are driven in at one shot, it counts four. If all three are driven in at one shot, it is a sweep and wins the game without further scoring. The first player scoring ten points wins the game. A miss gives the next player a chance.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the half-boxesA- A, provided with the openings to a, the marbles B B B, set in advance of the half-boxes, and the shooting device consisting of the cue 0, provided with the double elastic cord D and rubber ball E, as shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
2. The shooting device consisting of the cue O, the double elastic cord D,attached to the small end thereof, and the rubber ball E, strung on the cord, the whole so arranged, as herein described, that the device is set ready for use by drawing the ball over the base end of the cue, as specified.
3. In billiard toys, the combination of two my name in the presenee'of two subscribing sectional pockets, each provided with an arch witnesses. or opening on one side and capable of being I EPII M v1 1 Y M \IASI 13R. shut together for eonvenlence of transporta- 0S 5 tion and storage, as herein shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed YVitnesses:
R. F. OSGOOD, WM. J. MoPHERsoN.
