E- zz mfi/g iyl;
ADJUSTABLE HANGER FOR BRICK WALL BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Brick walls are often provided inside of homes and other places and present a problem whenever a picture or other object is to be hung on the wall. The present methods most commonly used of attaching pictures to the wall is to drill a hole in the wall and set an anchor in the hole, which results in a permanent disfigurement of the wall. Adhesives have also been widely used but they likewise are very difficult to remove.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION My invention provides a hanging device for attachment to the brick on a brick wall so that a picture or other object can be hung on the brick wall. This attachment is easily installed on all normal size bricks and provides a very sturdy hanger capable of holding very heavy weights while at the same time being removable with nearly the same case as removing the picture or object being hung. An upright member is placed against the front face of the brick and hooks on to the top face of the brick while a lever member is fitted near the bottom face of the brick and hooks on to the bottom face of the brick causing the upright member and the lever member to clamp themselves on to the brick when an object is hung on the outward extending portion of the lever.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is an oblique view of the hanger of this invention applied to a brick wall.
FIG. 2 is a front plan view of the hanger of FIG. 1 as applied to the brick wall.
FIG. 3 is a vertical sectional view of 3-3 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 4 is a top view of an alternative lever for use in the invention shown in FIG. 1.
FIG. 5 is a side view of the lever of FIG. 4.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS As best viewed in FIG. 1 a brick, 10, secured in mortar, l2, exposes a top face, 14, the bottom face, 16, and a front face, 18. The upright member, 20, is provided with a hook, 22, at its top which bites into the top face, 14, of brick, 10. Outwardly extending flanges, 24 and 26, are secured to the upright, 20, and define a slot, 28, in which lever, 30, operates around pivot pin, 32, resting in recesses, 34 and 36, on flanges, 24, and 26.
As best viewed in FIG. 3 it will be seen that lever, 30, is provided with a hook, 38, and a channel, 40, on opposite sides of pivot pin, 32. In the case of hanging a picture the wire from the picture would rest in channel,
40, providing a downward force on channel, 40, causing hook, 38, to bite into the bottom face, 16, of brick, 10, as well as causing hook, 22, to bite into top face,1- 4,of brick, 10. Because of the position of pin, 32, and the clamping action on the brick a very secure anchor is obtained capable of holding very heavy objects.
Lever, 30, as illustrated in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3, is a U- shaped channel member having a base, 31, and two legs, 33, and 35, with hook, 38, being formed by bending part of base, 31. The recess, 40, being cut through base, 31, into legs, 33, and 35, and the pivot pin, 32, passes through and affixed to suitable holes in legs, 33 and 35, to prevent the pin from being removed.
When the hanger is to be removed from the wall lever, 30, is tipped upwardly on the outside disengaging hook, 38, and hook, 22, from brick, 10. If the device is to be attached to a brick of a different size then lever, 30, is lifted out of recesses, 34, and 36, and slipped back into a new recess to accomodate the new sixe brick and the operation is the same as described above.
FIGS. 4 and 5 illustrate another example of a structure for lever, 30, of FIG. 1. FIG. 4 is a top plan view of a lever, 50, having an inner hook, 52, and an outer recess, 54, and a pair of pivot pin bearings, 56, and 58. As best viewed in FIG. 5 a pivot pin bearing hole, 60, is provided for the press fit of pivot pin, 32.
Having thus described my invention there will be modifications that are readily apparent to those skilled in the art and I therefore intend to be limited only by the following claims.
I claim:
1. A device for hanging an object on a brick wall, comprising;
a base strap rectangular shaped having an inside face for laying against the outer face of a brick, a bend in said base strap across the whole width of the base strap at one end forming a hook toward the inside face; and
a slot through said base strap formed between two outwardly extending walls secured to said base intermediate the sides of the base strap and extending the long dimension of the base strap, and
a plurality of recess pairs in said outwardly extending walls extending from the outer edge of said walls downwardly and inwardly toward the said base strap, and
a lever located in said slot provided with a pivot pin located in one said recess pair whereby said lever may pass through said slot in said base strap and the pivot pin is held in said recess pair in said outwardly extending walls.
