SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,109, dated November 15, 1887.
Application led January 13, 1886. Serial No.18B,473. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES TURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Crosse, inthe county of La Crosse and State of Wiscousin, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pipe-Couplings, which is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a pipe-coupling embodying my invention; Eig. 2, a sectional view of the same,taken on the line x :c of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, aside elevation of one of the members detached; Fig. 4, an end view of the same, and Fig. 5 acentral longitudinal section of the same, taken on a plane corresponding to the linea: :n of Fig. l.

My invention relates to pipe-couplings, its object being to provide a coupling which shall be simple in construction and may be readily and rapidlyfconnccted and disconnected; and to these ends my invention consists in certain novel features, which I will now proceed to describe, and will then particularly point out in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, each member A ot' the coupling consists of a head, A', and of a stem, A2, the head consisting of a cylindrical enlargement, as shown, and the stem lbeing adapted to receive the pipe or tube B, which is secured lthereto in any suitable manner. An aperture, c, passes through the whole of lthe coupling and communicates wiih the interior of the pipes which are connected thereto. One-half of the wall of this aperture is prolonged by means of a' semi-cylindricalv projection, a', which extends out beyond the head of the member, as shown,
and in' the opposite wall is formed a semi-cylindrical seat, c2, of corresponding dimensions, to receive the projection c' on the other member, which is similarly constructed. To each member is hinged a clasp, C, which extends entirely across the two heads, as shown, and is provided at its extremiiies with projecting anges c, which catch over the edges of the heads A', as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.
It will be seen that when the clasps C are swung up out of the way the two members of thev coupling may be readily brought together face to face, the projection a. on each member tting into the corresponding recess a? in the other member, and thus preventing the couplings from being separated by any lateral motion or strain and from being rotated the one upon. the other. rlhe clasps C being then brought down so as to embrace the heads,will hold the two members of the coupling firmly together, the whole forming a tightly-locked joint. It will be seen that the parts are simple in construction, and may be connected and disconnected with great ease and rapidity.
The clasps may be made to fit so snugly as to hold the two members in position by their frictional contact with the head, and to increase this frictional contact the flanges c thereof may be spring-flanges, if desired. In positions where the con pling will be subject to violent use any suitable locking device for the clasps may be employed, if desired.

I am aware of Letters Patent No. 246,293, granted August 30,1881, to Cooman and Dallard, and I therefore do not wish to be understood as claiming anything set forth in said Letters Patent.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The hereinbefore-described pipecoupling, consisting of the two members, each having a head, A', provided with internal seats, a2, and scinicylindrical projections c, the said projections being constructed and arranged to tit within the said seats when the heads are in contact, and the clasps C, pivoted to their respective members, so as tor swing transversely to the length of the coupling, and provided with flanges c, to catch over the edges of the heads, substantially as and for the -pnrposes specified.
