W. W. BELL.
BUCKLE. No. 354,528. Patented Dec. 21,1886.
IN V'EN 'IOR UN TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM V. BELL, OF VALLEY SPRINGS, DAKOTA TERRITORY.
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 354,528, dated December 21, 1886.
Application filed April 10, 1886.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM: W. BELL, of Valley Springs, in the county of Minnehaha and Territory of Dakota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buckles, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved hame-strap buckle and method of applying the same. Fig. 2 is a sectional view; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the frame, and Fig. 4 a perspective View of the tongue.
This invention relates to an improvement in buckles for hame-straps, &c., consisting of a rectangular frame having near its upper part an opening for a looped end of the strap, and immediately beneath it a forwardly-projecting wing, forming a second opening for the introduction. of the other end of the strap, and immediately beneath a pivoted corrugated tongue to engage with the leather, and thus prevent its being drawn through the opening, but it may be easily and expeditiously opened, as desired, all of which will now be fully set forth in detail.
In the accompanying drawings, A and A represent the lower ends of an ordinary pair of hames connected together by means of the usual hame-strap, B. I provide a metallic buckle, 0, formed somewhat rectangular, preferably with a partition or division, D, therein near the top and at right angles with the body of the buckle, this partition extending forwardly at one side from the frame 0, and immediately beneath this forward end E, I provide a projecting shelf or partition,
' F, with sufficient room between the shelf F and forwardly-projecting part E to permit of the introduction of the strap, the sides of the frame 0 being projected forwardly, as shown at O, to receive the projecting parts E and F. An opening, G, is provided in the rear extension of the partition D, so that, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the end of the strap B may Beneath the partition E, I provide a metal tongue, H, having downwardlyprojecting wings I at the sides, which are provided with openings J Serial No. 198,457. (No model.)
therein so disposed as .to be hinged to the lower part of the frame 0. Its upper flattened face is somewhat angled and provided with a series of corrugations, K. This tongue is designed to be of such a length that when the strap is passed through between the partition E and forwardly-projecting wing F and reversed slightly the" corrugations K and this tongue H will engage therewith and hold it securely in position. This tongue is so dis-' posed that it may only tilt forward sufiiciently to allow of its engaging with the strap, when it is again slightly pushed forward when it is desired to release it from the buckle.
The strap E is secured by means of a rivet, L, to the partition-D, and then extending forward passes through the lower end of the hame A, and returning parallel therewith again passes through the upper end of the frame 0 and engaging with the opposite end of the hame A again returns and passes beneath the partition D and over the forwardlyprojecting wing F, wherethe tongue H is permitted to engage with it. Whenever it is desired to undo the hames, the end M of the strap is pulled'forward slightly, thus releasing the tongue Hand permitting the said strap to be disengaged from the buckle.
It is obvious that this buckle may be used for a variety of purposes, and is not limited to its application to an ordinary hame attachment.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new is-- 1. In a buckle, a rectangular frame having therein a partition at right angles with its body and extending beyond and parallel with a projection on the frame, thereby affording a passage for the strap between said partition and projection, combined with a tongue, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the frame (3, having the partition D at right angles therein, its ends extending on both sides of the frame, and the parallel projection F, combined with the tongue H, having a corrugated face, K, and hinged to said frame, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the frame 0, having In testimony that I claim the foregoing I the partition D, provided with the hole G in have hereunto set my hand, this 1st day of the extension on one side, its extension on the March, 1886, in the presence of Witnesses.
other side being parallel with the projection \VILLIAM W. BELL. 5 F of said frame, combined with the hinged or Witnesses:
pivoted tongue H, having a rounded and cor- FRANK O. BELL,
rugated face, substantially as described. I E. J. HETLAND.
