UNITED STATES P. KANE AND W'. FLOYD, OF SOUTH PERRY, OHIO.
IMPROVED BURG LAR-ALARM.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,842, dated December 3, 1.861.
110 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we,P. KANE and W. FLOYD, both of South Perry, in the county of Hocking and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Burglar-Alarms; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, in which a perspective view of the improved alarm is given with the side plate A removed, in order that the mechanism may be clearly understood.
Our invention consists in the adaptation to a common gun-lock inclosed in a suitable case .or stock and used as an alarm of certain devices, hereinafter described, whereby the same may be readily7 attached to a door or removed therefrom.
In consists, further, in the method of combining a peculiar trigger with the foregoing devices, by means of which, when the alarm is in place, the insertion of a door-key or other instrument from the outside causes its discharge.
A in the gure represents the case or portion of the stock of a pocket fire-arm in which the discharging mechanism is secured in the usual way.
B is the hammer of an ordinary gun-lock; E, the link connecting its tumbler with the mainspring C, and b the shoulder, against which the bent nose of the spring-Sear D takes when the cock is raised and keeps the same in place. This spring-Sear D we substitute for the customary sear and Sear-spring, because it is more compact, cheaper, less liable to derangement, and is also conveniently fitted to the trigger, a small square notch being formed in the side of it at d to receive the right extremity of the latter. The trigger is made from a thin plate of metal and elbowed atf, as shown in the drawing. Its right end rests in the scar-notch. It is pivoted at f', and the lower arm at f2 is bent rectangular-ly to the plane of its face, for a purpose hereinatt-er to be stated.
Instead of the usual trigger-guard, we provide the under side of the alarm-stock with a stii elliptic spring H, properly secured by screws or otherwise and either divided or perforated at h, in order to admit of the insertion into the stock of a rigid T-shaped stud I, 1ocated as shown, against the inner faces of whose cross-head z' the belly of the perforated or, as the case may be, the extremities, of the divided spring bear with a firm stress.
A percussion-cap may be used alone for the alarm, or the nipple may communicate with a chamber (indicated in dotted lines) and the stock be otherwise fitted up as a pocket-- weapon.
Having thus constructed and combined the several parts of our improved alarm, we apply it to use as follows: The cross-head i is thrust into the key-hole of the door-lock and the whole contrivance then turned quarter round, by reason of which movement the elliptic spring and stud on being released from the pressure of the hand strongly nip the lock-plate and hold the machine steadily at right angles to the face thereof, the triggerarm F pointing fairly inward along the axis of the key-hole. The discharge is effected when the cock is raised by a slight pressure on the trigger in the direction of the arrow, which disengages the spring-Sear and allows the hammer to fall. Such a pressure is caused, of course, by the attempt to introduce a key or other instrument from'the outside after the alarm is set, the broad bent portion f2 of the trigger being specially provided to intercept any movement of that nature and to give timely notice of it by the explosion of the charge.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`
l. The combination of stud I, spring H, and case A, substantially as described, whereby the alarm can be readily applied to any or dinary door-lock.
2. The plunging trigger F, in combination with the devices above referred to, and with the alarm mechanism, constructed, arranged, and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
P. KANE. IV. FLOYD.
