UNITED STATES PATENT Fries..
SURClNGLE-BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,765, dated October 20, 1885.
Application filed July 6, 1885. Serial N o. 170,721. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERNEsT DRMING, of Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Im provement in Surcingle-Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure l,a face view of the buckle complete; Fig. 2, the same view of the frame, the tongues removed; Fig. 3, the blanks as prepared for the hinged tongue, broken lines showing it as bent around the bar; Fig. 4, a central section cutting through the band and securing-strap.
This invention relates to an improvement in buckles for that class of surcingles consisting of a broad fabric band with a narrow standingstrap at one end carrying a buckle suitable to engage the free strap secured to the other end and only adjustable to the length of the free strap.
My object is to provide an adjustable buckle for this class of surcingles; and it consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and particularlyv specified in the claim.
The upper bar, A, and the lower bar, B, connected at the ends, form the principal frame, its length corresponding to the width of the surcingleband.
C is a bar extending longitudinally across I construct the tongues of malleable or sheet metal, as shown in Fig. 3, with ears b b, and the portion d d between the tongues a a a adapted to bend around the bar C, so as to form a hinge, the tongues a a a resting upon the bar A and prevented from longitudinal movement by shoulders e e upon the bar C.
D is an auxiliary frame formed on and below the bar B, in length corresponding to the width of the securing-strap.
fis a tongue hung upon the bar B, extending across the frame D, forming a buckle for the securing-strap.
E is a loop on the upper bar, A, forming a tuck for the said strap.
To attach the surcingleband, pass one end underthe bar A, over the bar C and tongues a a a, and under the bar B, as shown in Fig. 4, and it will be held in any desired position by the tongues a c a pressing into or through the band and bearing upon the bar A.
To secure the surcingle to an animal, pass the band around the body and engage the strap with the buckle D, its end passing over the frame into the tuck E.
By making the shoulders e e on the bar C as a support longitudinally for the tongues I am enabled to shorten the body of the tongue and reduce the weight of the buckle to that extent.
I do not claim, broadly, a buckle in which the frame forms substantially two frames integral the 011e with the other, one being broader than the other, as such, I am aware, is not new.
I claim- The herein described buckle for surcingles, composed of the bars A B, forming two sides of the frame, in length corresponding to the width of the band, and connected at their ends, the bar C,longitudinally across the frame between the said bars A B, the said bar C constructed with shoulders e e, tongues a a a, hinged to said bar C between said shoulders, the bar B constructed with a loop, D, in length corresponding to the width of the securingstrap, the tongue b hung upon the bar B, and which, with the loop D, forms a buckle for the securing-strap, and the barAconstructed with the loop E to form a tuck for the said securing strap, substantially as described.
ERNEST DEMING.
