STEPHEN IIIAPYVIN, OF BURNETTS'VILLE, INDIANA.
TENT.
`Si'T-ECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,993, dated June 24, 1884.
Application filed N .vc1nher 9, i883. (No model.)
To all whom t 71mg/ concern,
Be it known that I, STEPHEN MARVIN, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Burnettsville, in the county of Vhite and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Tent,
of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to tents; and it has for its object to provide a simple, convenient, and inexpensive device which may be readily and quickly folded or unfolded, as the occasion may require.
To this end the invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure l is a side view of' my improved tent, showing the same folded. Fig. 2 is a side view showing the tent extended. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the tent extended. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view on the line x :c in Fig. 2.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
A in the drawings designates the centerpole, which is provided at -or near its upper end with a ferrule, B, having at its lower edge an annular flange, C, to which a series of radiating ribs, D D, are hinged in any suitable manner, so as'to be capable of folding down flat against the center pole.
To the ribs D is secured J[he cover E, which is constructed somewhat like the cover of an. umbrella, and adapted to be folded in a similar manner. Y
Secured to the lower or outer end ol' each of the ribs D is a rope or cord, F, which passes over a pulley, G, attached to the pole A above the ferrule B, one such-pulley being arranged above each ofthe ribs. From thence the said cords pass in a downward direction through Aperforations or guide-openings H, formed in the flange C, and the inner ends of the said ropes or cords are attached to a collar, I, sliding vertically upon the center-pole. Itwill be seen that by pulling the said. collar in a downward direction upon the pole the ribs will be raised and the tent unfolded. The collar I may be manipulated by means of ashaft, J, j ournaled transversely in the center-pole, and connected with said collar by 'ropes K K.
The end ofthe shaft has a crank, L, by which it may be turned so as to wind the ropes K K, and thus pull the collar in afdownward direction. The shaft may be provided with a ratchetwheel, M, engaging a pawl, N, pivoted to the pole, or other suitable mechanism may be provided for retaining the shaft when the ropes K have been wound upon the same. The tentcover Il is provided with a series of radial pockets, O O, in which are placed brace-rods l I?, which, when the tent is extended, may be drawn partly out of said pockets and driven into the ground, thus serving to brace and steady the tent. Suitable stay-ropes, Q, may also be provided.
Secured to the top of the center-pole is a cap or deflector, It, constructed of flexible water-'prooi' material, which overlaps the joint between the top of the tent-cover and the center-pole and prevents water from entering through said joint in case of rainy weather.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed,
the operation and adv-antages of this invention will be readily understood. The construction is simple and inexpensive, and the tent may be easily manipulated and removed from place to place.
I am aware that it is not broadly new in the construction of tents to employ a central pest, jointed radial ribs, and cords passing from the ribs to a runner, with cords passed over pulleys at the top of the post, and in connection with such a tent an additional top covering supported from the top of the pole and by the ribs'at a point intermediate of' their length; but
I claim as my invention and desire to secure -by Letters Patent of the United States* l. In a folding tent, the combination of the center-pole, avferrule at the upper end of the same, provided with an annular flange, ribs hinged to said flange, a cover secured to the said ribs, a sleeve or collar sliding vertically upon the center-pole, and ropes or cords attached to said sleeve or collar, passing through guide-openin gs in the fiange ofthe ferrule and over pulleys at the upper end ofthe centerpole, and having their ends attached to the lower or outer ends of the ribs, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the center-pole, the
IOO
hinged ribs, the cover secured to the said ribs, a sleeve or collar sliding vertically upon the center-pole, ropes connecting said collar with the lower outer ends of the ribs, said ropes passing over pulleys at the top of the centerpole7 a shaft or reel journaled transversely on the eenter-pole below the sliding Collar, and equipped with a crank or handle, ropes connecting said shaft with the said collar, and means for retaining the said shaft at any position to which it may be turned, substantially as set forth.
3. rIhe combination of the center-pole, the hinged ribs provided with elevating mechanism, substantially as described, the cover secured to the said ribs, and provided with radial pockets, and brace-rods seated in the said pockets, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The Combination of the center-pole, the hinged ribs provided with elevating mechanism, substantially as described, the cover secured to the said ribs, and a flexible 'cap orv
