STOP-COCK.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 29,744, dated August 21, 1860.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY A. CHAPIN, of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Compression- Stop and I/Vaste for IVater-Pipes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a kind of water stop, known as a compression stop and waste. It is the office of av stop and waste cock to form a connection in a water pipe such when the stop is open the water has a free circulation through the pipe without leak, but when the sto-p is closed it stops off the water from the pipe on one side of it and at the same time opens a passage which allows the water in said portion of the pipe to iow out thus preventing freezing, or for other purposes. In the old key stop the arrangement for the waste was very simple, but as the compression stop has come into general use it is desirable to find some simple and effectual method of producing the same result, which I claim that I have done in the arrangement herewith presented.
The drawing is a longitudinal section of the stop, showing clearly the whole arrangement.
A, is the shell; B, the valve faced on the bottom with a washer a of india rubber forming a water tight joint on the seat C, in the shell A, when pressed down by means of the screw D, and handle E, all of which parts are constructed and operated in the usual manner, therefore a minute description is unnecessary.
The peculiarity of my invention consists in forming an opening F, in the shell under the valve B, and attaching to said valve another valve G, in such a manner that whenever the valve B, is raised (thereby forming a free passage for the water through the stop the valve Gr will close the opening F, but when the valve B, is pressed down and the stop closed, the valve Gr, will be removed from the opening F, and the water already in the pipe beyond the stop allowed to run out through the tube H. The arrow shows the direction of the flow of the water.
I am aware that several devices have been invented for accomplishing the same result with the compression stop, but they are all subject to the same objection-viz., liability to derangement. Also this arrangement has another very decided advantage over almost all the other arrangements, for in them the waste opening is situated in a portion of the shell above the level of the pipe to which the stop is attached. Therefore allA the pipe on that level will always be filled with water, whereas this device empties all the pipe and one half of the stop. Furthermore, this device is self-clearing. A stop and waste is always liable to be placed in cellars and other places subject to dust and dirt, and even the old key stop (which was the surest and most effectual in regard to the waste) was liable to become stopped up, but in this the movement of the Valve G will start any dirt or obstruction in the tube H, so that the flow of water will effectually clear it.
Now having fully described the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the valve B, and its seat and opening in the shell C, the valve G, and its seat, and opening F, in the shell A the several parts being arranged to operate as herein set forth and described.
