(Cl. 206-46) This invention relates to packages and more particularly toa display package wherein the packaged goods may be displayed in a novel and attractive manner.

It is an object of this invention to provide a display package which covers all corners of the packaged articles to retain them in the package in a positive manner, as distinguished from frictional engagement, without danger of such articles becoming accidently disengaged from the package, and at the same time exposing at least one of the articles to` visual inspection and handling.

It is another object of the invention to provide a display package having a body portion and pockets at the ends of the body portion for receiving the ends of an article superimposed on the body portion, the remainder of said article between said pockets being exposed to visual inspection and handling.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a package of the type described wherein one of the pockets is provided with means for retaining the cui end of one of a pair of packaged socks while at the same time exposing the cuit portion to visual inspection and handling.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a display package which forms a picture frame eiect about the articles carried thereby whereby an attractive display package is provided.

Another object of the invention is to provide a display package for socks which comprises a body portion including a bottom Wall, side walls, and ilaps hinged to the side walls and adapted to overlie the bo'ttom wall, said body portion dening a receptacle for the socks, and said package also including aps articulated to opposed ends of the body portion and extending about their respective ends of the body portion to define pockets opening toward each other above the ends of the body portion. The package may also include an insert for the leg portion of a sock which is supported by the body portio'n and extends into the pockets to be retained thereby.

Some of the objects of the invention having been stated other objects will appear as the description proceeds when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which- Figurel is a plan view of the blank from which the package is formed;

Figure 5 is a plan view of the back of an assembled package illustrating one manner in which the end flaps may be secured to' the body portion of the package.

The invention is illustrated and described in connection with the packaging of socks, but it is contemplated that the invention may be utilized in the packaging of CC i other articles capable of being supported at their ends with or without resort to stiifening means such as inserts. The terms end or ends as used herein in connection with the packaged article refers to an end formed by a fold line or to an actual end of the packaged article.

The numeral 10 broadly indicates a display package comprising an elongated rectangular body portion 11 which may include spaced longitudinal score lines 12 and 13 and spaced transverse score -lines 14 and 1S. The score lines 12 and 13 dene side walls 16 therebetween and the transverse score lines 14 and 15 deiine end walls 17 therebetween. The body portion 11 may also include longitudinal flaps 18 joined to the side walls 16 by the score lines 13.

Pocket flaps 19 are joined to the en-d walls 17 by the transverse score lines 15', the pocket flaps 19 including side panels 20 defined by score lines 21 which extend in substantial alinement with longitudinal score lines 12 and parallel score lines 22 spaced outwardly from the score lines 13 so that the side panels 20 on the pocket ilaps 19 are of greater height when erected than the side walls 16 on the body portion 11. This results in the pocket flaps 19 being spaced above the body portion 11 to define article receiving spaces or pockets P when the package is erected. The score lincs.22 define the inner ends of connecting tabs 23 which may include an outwardly tapered portion 24 and a generally arcuate free end portion 25 articulated to the tapered portion 24 by a score line 26. Shoulders 27 are dened at the junctures of the generally arcuate portions 25 with their respective tapered portions 24. The arcuate end portions 25 are receivable within T-shaped cut-.outs 28 having a short leg 29 formed adjacent each corner of the body portion 11, as shown in Figure 5, the shoulders 27 being engageable with the body portion to retain the package 10 in erected condition.

The free end of at least o'ne pocket flap 19 is cut away as at 36 to dene a tongue 31, which is illustrated as extending only slightly beyond the free edge of its end flap, but which may, if desired, extend substantially the length of the body portion and be of suicient overall width to serve as an insert for a sock. In the alternative, and as illustrated herein, a separate insert 32 of rectangular configuration and adapted to receive the leg and cuil portio'n of a socket may be used in conjunction with the remainder of the package of this invention.

As illustrated in Figure 2, the package is assembled by laying a rst sock S-l, folded transversely about the heel pocket, on the body portion 11. The foot po'rtion of the second sock of a pair, S-2, is laid on top of sock S-1 with the leg portion of the sock S2 drawn on the insert 32 extending o'ver the end flap 19 remote from the tongue 31. The longitudinal flaps 18 are then folded over the sock S-1 and the foot portion of the sock S-2,

after which the sock S-2 is folded about its heel portion to position the leg portion of the sock S-2 and its insert 32 on the inwardly folded longitudinal tlaps 18.

The pocket ilaps 19 are folded inwardly in overlying relation to the ends of the socks S-2 and the tongue 31 is inserted in the cuit of the sock S-2 where it is positioned between the cuit and its insert 32, as shown in Figure 4, after which the connecting tabs 23 are folded into overlying relation with the body portion 11 and inserted within the T-shaped cut-outs 28. The short leg 29 of the T-shaped cut-outs 28 permits deflection of the body portion 11 adjacent the cut-outs to engage the shoulders 27 and releasably retain the tabs 23.

It will be apparent from the foregoing description and drawings that the package positively engages the ends of both stockings of the pair to thereby prevent accidental displacement while at the same time attractively displaying the exposed sock, including its culf, to the observer and rendering-it available to be handled without disturbing the package or removing the sock from the package. it will also be apparent that the assembled package forms an attractive picture frame arrangement about the displayed sock while at the same time providing suitable?l 5 space for identifying and advertising indicia.
