Description

Feb. 17, 1959 EA. POULOS COMBINED GARBAGE CAN HANDLE'AND LATCH Filed July 15, 1957 INVENTOR. WK M4 United States Patent COMBINED GARBAGE CAN HANDLE AND LATCH Ernest A. Poulos, Montgomery, Ala.
Application July 15, 1957, Serial No. 671,916
1 Claim. (Cl. 220-551) This invention relates to a combined garbage can handle and latch. It has for its main Objects to provide such a device that will be highly satisfactory for the purpose intended, simple in structure, cheap to manufacture easy to use and keep in working condition, and very durable.
A further object is to provide simple means for keeping a lid on a garbage can closed so the lid will not open if the can is pushed over on its side, and also have the latch easy to release when desired.
Other objects and advantages will appear from the drawing and description.
By referring generally to the drawing it will be observed that Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a garbage can with a handle and latch, made according to this invention, attached thereto; Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the upper part of a can and showing the latch and handle in full lines and in broken lines; Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of a can with the latch in closed condition; and Fig. 4 is an elevational view showing how the handle and latch are attached to the can.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that a garbage can 1 having a lid 2 is provided with a comparatively long metal strip handle 3 having its lower end attached by rivets 4 to the can body. A metal strip 5 has one end 6 attached by rivets 4 to the can lid with its other end 8 bent to form a companion portion adapted 2,873,880 Patented Feb. 17, 1959 to fit under the bent end 7 of the handle 3. A hinge has one end 9 attached to the lid by rivets 4 with its other end 10 attached by rivets 4 to the can.
From the foregoing it will appear that when the lid is closed the latch will be in the position shown in Fig. 3. To open the lid the latch is adapted to be moved by manual means to the position shown by broken lines in Fig. 2.
The can and lid and hand-latch parts may be made of any material suitable for the purpose, but I prefer to use good grades of metal; also the same may be made in dilferent sizes and capacities depending on how and where to be used.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to limit same to the exact and precise details of structure, and reserve the right to make all modifications and changes so long as they remain within the scope of the invention and the following claim.
Having described my invention I claim:
A combined garbage can handle and latch of the char acter described in combination with a garbage can having a lid, said handle and latch comprising a comparatively long strip of metal, one end of the strip being attached to a side of the can and bent to form space between the can and the strip, the other end of the strip being bent partly toward the can and then bent upward to thus form a latch portion; a second piece of similar metal References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS Tinnerman Sept. 19, 1944 Gordon May 21, 1957
