DISPENSING CARTON-S PROVIDED WITH CUTTERS Filed Jan. 28, 1954 IN V EN TOR.
Mfld Z Burbank ATTORNE).
United States Patent '0 DISPENSING CARTONS PROVIDED WITH CUTTERS Wendell T. Burbank, Three Rivers, Mich assignor to Sutherland Paper Company, Kalamazoo, Mich.,a corporatiorrof Michigan Application January 28, 1954, Serial No. 406,792
6 Claims. (Cl. 206-58) This invention relates to dispensing cartons provided :with cutters.
The mainobjects of this invention are:
'First, to provide a dispensing carton provided with a cutter which is highly efiicient as a cutter and at the same time is not likely to prick or scratch, or otherwise injure the user.
Second, toprovide in a dispensing carton a cutter structure which constitutes an effective reinforcement and binding for the wall to which it is applied.
Objectsrelating to details and economies of the invention will appear'from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a front perspective view of a dispensing carton embodying my invention with a portion of the web of paper withdrawn from the carton.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary section on a line corresponding to line 2--2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged front elevational view.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged inside elevational view of the front Wall and cutter thereon.
It will be understood that no attempt has been made to show the parts in their relative proportions and in Fig. 2 the material of the carton, the material dispensed and the cutter are illustrated much thicker than the actual material used in the commercial structure.
My present invention is in some respects an adaptation of and an improvement upon the invention of my application for Letters Patent filed October 24, 1952, Serial No. 316,593.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, the carton designated generally by the numeral 1 is of the collapsible type but as the details of the collapsible features form no part of this invention they are not illustrated or described.
The carton comprises a front wall 2 and cover 3 having a tucking flap 4 adapted to be disposed at the inner side of the front wall. The paper 5, transparent or filmlike paper being illustrated, is commonly a rolled web of paper. The web of paper is passed under the flap 4 and upwardly between the flap and the front wall 2 as is illustrated in Fig. 2.
The cutter element designated generally by the numeral 6 is of downwardly facing U-section, the bight portion 7 being upwardly curved and the lower edges 8 of the arms 9 being converged inwardly to clampingly engage the front wall 2 as shown at 10. These inturned edges are substantially embedded in the front wall with the flanges 9 in clamping engagement with the sides of the front wall. It will be noted that the edges 8 are not directly opposed but one is somewhat above the other.
The cutter is provided with A-shaped inwardly curved teeth 11 which are struck out from the curved bight portion of the cutter. The teeth are substantially spaced at their bases and merge into the outer flange 9 of the cutter. The tips of the teeth project substantially above the Z,766,8 77 Patented .Oct. .16 195.6
ice
bight of the cutter and are disposed between general planes vertically extended of the inner :and .cuter arms to space the tips of the teeth somewhat fromthe sheet 5 when the same is pulled vertically from there-an ton, as shown in Fig. 2. The inner arm 9 is -,disposed adjacent'the closure flap 4 to coact therewith to;provide guiding means for the sheet when ;drawn from the carton. The cutter-is disposed over the edgexof the :front wall and clamped thereon and constitutes abinding :and reinforcing member therefor.
The inward curvature of the teeth presents fthe'irtips in a manner to very eifectively engage the material .;di'spensed as it is drawn outwardly and downwardly :over the cutter. Further, this inward curvature and the mergingof the teeth into the outer arm of the .cutter presents a substantially smooth outer surface and materially 21B- duces the hazard of pricks and scratches in=thehandlirrg and use of the dispensing carton.
Thus :formed and arranged .the cutter, -.even when formed of light stock as is the commercial practice-serves as an-eifective binding and reinforcementfor ,the :front wall which is the part of the-carton that is subjected :to stressin dispensing use. The'spacing-of-the;'teethrinsures their elfective penetration of the paper-and results .in an effective straight linecutting action.
I have illustrated and described a highly practical embodiment of my invention. I have not attempted .tolillustrate or describe other adaptations or embodiments .as it is believed this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my invention as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A dispensing carton including a front wall and a cover having a closure flap positioned on the inner side of the front wall, a cutter of downwardly facing U-shape having a curved bight portion and substantially parallel arms terminating in inwardly converging flange-like edge portions, and a series of A-s'haped inwardly curved teeth struck out from the bight portion with their bases spaced and merging into the outer arm of the cutter and their tips projecting laterally inwardly and disposed above the curved bight portion of the cutter and between the general planes vertically extended of the inner and outer arms, said cutter being embracingly disposed over the edge of the front wall with the arms thereof in fixedly clamped engagement therewith with the tips of the teeth in a plane between the bight portion of the cutter and the plane of the top of the cover, the inner arm of the cutter being disposed adjacent the closure flap and coacting therewith to guide a sheet being dispensed from the carton, said cutter being of a length corresponding to the length of the front wall and constituting a reinforcement and binding for the edge thereof, the inner arm engaging the inner side of the wall adjacent the upper edge of the wall to support the cutter against outward tilting movement relative to the wall when a sheet being dispensed from the carton is drawn outwardly laterally of the wall and against the tips of the inwardly curved teeth to cut the sheet.
