1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a foldable and portable unit which serves as a bed and bath for a young child.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a foldable and portable bed and bath which is comfortable, light weight, compact, and easy to operate.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described which comprises tubular aluminum frames hinged together in a novel manner for smooth operation and tubular aluminum supports also hinged to the frame in a novel manner for smooth operation.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described which can be readily folded to occupy a small space, and, because it is light in weight, can be easily transported with a minimum of discomfort.
These, together with various ancillary objects and features of the invention which will later become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by the device, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated, by way of example only, in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the assembled device Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the device :shown in a folded position and with the basket .removed;
view illustrating the hinged connection between the frame members; and
Figure 6 is a fragmentary enlarged perspective view of a portion of the basket.
Specific reference will now be made to the drawings. In the several views, in the accompanying drawings and in the following specification, similar reference characters indicate corresponding elements throughout.
The present portable bed and bath comprises a rectangular frame 9 which is fabricated of two tubular, aluminum, U-shaped frame members or sections l0 and 12 having leg portions [4 and I6 and i8 and 20 interconnected by bight portions 22 and 24, respectively. The corresponding free ends of the leg portions l4 and I8 and of the leg portions l6 and 20 are hinged together for movement in a vertical plane in a manner to be described hereinafter and shown clearly in Figures 1 and 5.
Secured by means of rivets 26 and.28 to the free ends of the corresponding leg portions [4, l8 and I6, 20 is a pair of collars 30 and 32 which have depending ears 34 and 36 which overlap each other at their free ends and which are hinged thereat by a suitable rivet or double headed pin 38. Thus, it will be seen that the two U-shaped frame sections I0 and I2 may be folded upwardly to assume a horizontal position as shown in Figure 1, or may be folded downwardly to assume the position shown in Figure 2 without the necessity of disassembling the two frame members from each other. It should be remembered that the collars and rivets may be dispensed with and the corresponding free ends of the leg portions 14, I8 and I6, 20 slotted to receive the upper portions of the hinged depending cars 34 and 36.
A pair of tubular aluminum supports 40 and 42 are provided which are substantially U- shaped, each of the supports including inturned end portions 44 which are journaled in the bight portions 22 and 24 of the frame sections l0 and I2, respectively. The bends 46 of the frame sections l0 and 12 have formed therein openings 41 which are aligned with the bight portions of said frame sections and which accommodate the members 44. Thus, the supports 40 and 42 are foldable'inwardly relative to the U-shaped frame as shown clearly in Figure 2 and when unfolded into the support position, as shown in Figure 1, are retained fixedly in that position by means of conventional hinged braces 48 terminally interconnecting the vertical sides of the supports 40 and 42 and the legs of the two U-shaped frames l0 and I2.
A substantially rectangular basket 50 is provided which is fabricated of a suitable textile material such as canvas or of a suitable plastic, and is removably supported upon the U-shaped frame sections l0 and I2 as shown clearly in Figure 1. The marginal edges 52 of the basket are folded around the legs and bight portions of the U-shaped frame sections and are removably suspended thereon by means of conventional male and female snap fasteners 54.
In use, the frame sections l0 and I2 and supports 40 and 42 are unfolded to assume an upright position as shown in Figure 1 and the basket 50 is suspended on the frame sections l0 and [2 in a manner obvious upon inspection of the drawings. The basket may be filled with water through a suitable hose, the basket being provided with a plug 58. If desired, a mattress may be placed in the basket and the device can conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it
is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be'qui te apparent to thoseiskilledin this art. A mor'e fietailed'xiescripfiion zisr accoriiingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even:
though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, the-same is susceptible to certain changestf-lu-lly comprehended by the spirit of thezinvention'aasiherein 15 described and within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention; w'hatis claimed as new is:
A portable bed and bath comprising a sub- =stantially irectainguiar, .ioldableirame including a pairot tubular; ;U-shape'd sections vhingedly 4 connected at their ends and having openings in the bends thereof aligned with their bight portions, substantially U-shaped supports mounted for swinging movement on the ends of the frame and terminating in inturned end portions passing through the openings and journaled in said bight portions of the frame sections, and a basket mounted on the .frame.
