Description

J. H. SHAW May 22, 1951 DISPENSER FOR THE CONTENTS OF COLLAPSIBLE TUBES Filed Sept. 15, 1948 .R. m m V (/g #77 bis/kw ATTURN EY Patented May 22, 1951 UNITED STATES iATENT OFFICE DISPENSER FOR THE CONTENTS OF COLLAPSIBLE TUBES The object of the invention is to provide a wall-suspended device for the convenient periodic dispensing of the contents of collapsible tubes, such as those containing tooth-paste; to provide a construction of this character in which the tube is progressively squeezed from its sealed end; to provide means, in such a device, whereby the application of the tube initially may be accomplished with certainty and dispatch; to provide, in a device of this character, a lateral rest for the pendent portion of the tube and the tooth brush or other article onto which the contents are to be ejected, so that waste may be eliminated in the ejecting operation; and generally to provide a device for the indicated purpose which is simple in construction and which, at the same time, is susceptible of cheap manufacture and unlikely to suffer disarrangement or failure of its parts.
With this object in view the invention consists in a construction and a combination of parts of which a perfected embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure l is a front elevation of the invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof;
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2, but showing the apron shifted to separate the rolls;
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a view of Figure 1 looking up from the bottom.
In the use of the invention, the contents of a collapsible tube are dispensed by squeezing the tube from the bottom between complemental tangential rolls of which the roll I0 is a feed roll and the roll I! the idle roll. The roll H is movable toward and away from the roll [0 but is yieldingly impelled into contact with the latter or, when in use, with the tube.
The rolls are rotatedly mounted in a bracket which may be constructed in a single piece by a stamping process but which, in the illustrated embodiment consists of a wall plate 12 and hanger-arms M. The hanger-arms are in the form of angles of which the one flange of each is laid against the wall plate to which it is secured through the instrumentality of the screws IS.
The wall plate may be secured to a wall or other surface by fasteners inserted directly through it but, for convenient dismantling, it is preferable to construct it so as to be received in the conventional downwardly tapering wall socket ltd.
The journals of the rolls may in some in- 6 Claims.' (Cl. 222102) stances be formed as integral parts of the rolls but in the present instance they are bearing portions of the shafts I6 and H, the former of which rotates in circular bearings formed in the hanger-arms I l and the latter of which rotates in oval bearings which are in the parallel-sided slots I8.
The idle roll is impelled toward the feed roll by a compression spring l9 bearing one end against the plate contacting flanges of the hanger-arms and the other end against a yoke 29 which straddles the idle roll longitudinally with the legs bearing against the shaft H, the edges of the legs being formed with half round re cesses with which the shaft is snugly engaged.
From the transverse portion of the yoke, a guide shield 2| extends, the free end of the guide shield passing beyond the tangential plane of the rolls.
Pendent from the hanger-arms there is an apron 22 with which the ears 23 are integrally formed, the ears lying against the outer faces of the hanger-arms and being slotted, as indicated at 24, to provide throats in which the ends of the shaft I6 lie, .so that the apron may have a slight swinging movement. The rear edges of the ears are formed with camming edges 25 resulting from recessing the ears as indicated at 26. In the normal pendent position of the apron, the recesses 26 form clearance spaces for the extremities of the shaft ll, so that the roll I I may contact the roll ill or a tube interposed between them.
One end of the shaft I6 is extended a sufficient distance to receive the knurled finger knob 2'! by which angular or turning movement is imparted to the feed roll [0.
Complemental to the guide shield 2|, there is a tongue 28 which is formed as'an extension of the upper end of the apron and terminates adjacent the periphery of the idle roll II.
In the use of the invention, the initial operation is to apply the collapsible tube, such as indicated at 29, to the device. This operation consists in the pressing of the apron 22 laterally, when the camming edges 25 will engage the extremities of the shaft I? and thus force it and the roll H backwardly against the pressure of the spring IS. The sealed end of the tube 29 being then inserted between the rolls, the pressure on the apron may be relieved, when the idle roll will be forced into contact with the tube. After removal of the tube cap, rotation of the feed roll it! by means of the knob 21 will cause the tube to be drawn up between the rolls and at the same time compressed, ejecting the contents onto a brush or other article on which it is desired to place such contents. The apron acts not only to hold the pendent portion of the tube steady but acts as a steadying rest for the a brush or other article.
By reason of having the yoke legs so formed as to bear on only half of the periphery of the idle roll shaft, the yoke acts as abrake to too. free rotation of the roll.
As the contents of the tube are dispensed, the squeezed portion of the tube rises above the rolls but this portion is directed downwardly behind the idle roll through the functioningof the guide: shield 2|. And that it may not follow around" is" the idle roll, the tongue 28 functions: to: divert it downwardly.
And the invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is: e
l. A dispenser for the --contents of collapsible tubes comprising tube-squeezing complemental tangential rolls rotating on relatively laterally movable axes. and yieldingly impelled into peripheral. contact, a. mountingfor the rolls, and a pendent'apron carried by'themounting and actuableto separate the rolls-for the'initial application of a collapsible tube;
2. A dispenser for thecontents of collapsible tubes comprising tube-squeezing complemental tangential I'OllsOIlGOf which is spring-pressed 3 into peripheral contact with the other, a mounting. in which the'rolls' are J'ournaled, and a swingable apronpendent from the mounting and having camming elements engaged with the journals of the spring-pressed roll to manually separate the rolls for the initial application of a collapsible tube;
3. A dispenser for the contents of collapsible tubes comprising tube-squeezing complemental tangential rolls of which one is spring-pressed 40 into peripheral contact with theother, a mounting in which the rolls are journaled, and a guide shield for'deflecting the squeezed portion of the tube, .the guide shield being movable in common with the spring-pressed roll and covering the latter-and crossing the tangential plane of the rolls.
4; A- dispenser for the contents of collapsible tubes comprising a bracket, a feed roll journaled in the bracket, an idle roll also -journaled in the bracket'and laterally movable into and out of peripheral content with the feed roll, a yoke spanning the idle roll and bearing on the journals thereof, a spring carried by the bracket and bearing on the yoke to impel the latter and idle roll towards the feed roll.
5. A dispenser for the contents of collapsible tubes comprising a bracket, a feed roll journaled in the bracket, an idle roll also journaled in the bracket and laterally movable into and out of peripheral contact with. the feed.roll, a yoke spanning the idle roll and bearing on the journals thereof, a spring carried by the bracket and bearing on the yoke to impel the latter and the' idle. roll towards the feed roll, and a guide shield'carried by the yoke and deflecting downwardly; the squeezed portion of the tube.
6. A dispenser for the contents of collapsible tubes" comprising tube-squeezing complemental tangential-rolls of which one is yieldingly impelled into peripheral contact with the other, a mountingin-whichthe rolls are journaled, a guide. shield overhanging and movable in common with the yieldingly impelled roll and crossing the tangential plane of the two rolls for defllectingthe squeezedportion of a tube, and an' upwardly directed deflecting tongue terminating,
adjacent the periphery of the yieldingly impelled roll diametrically opposite its line of contact with the other roll, the tonguebeing interposed'between the yieldingly impelled roll and the guide shield to direct the squeezed portion of the tube away from the latter roll.
