Description
July 25, 1950 H. A. swAsTEK MASSAGE AND SHAMPOO DEVICE Filed Oct'. 8, 1945 Patented July 25, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT, .QFFICE s MASSAGE AND SHAMPODEVICE;
H I Henry 4Swastek, Chicago, Ill.
Application October 8, 1945, Serial No. 620,871
1 claim. 1
This invention relates to improvements in massage and shampoo devices and contemplates the provision of a device of this kind provided with a plurality of resilient fingers adapted to stimulate circulation of blood and loosen dandrufi' from the scalp of the user without injury to the scalp.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a device of this kind embodying a sponge portion preferably formed of sponge rubber to absorb a quantity of water for distribution onto the scalp of the user adjacent the plurality of the massage fingers, said sponge portion being formed of a suitable size and shape to be held in the hand of the user.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a massage and shampoo device provided with a plurality of cone-shaped resilient massage iingers enclosed by an annular ring of relatively less resilient massage ngers terminating short of the cone-shaped iingers.
This invention further contemplates the provision of a massage and shampoo device which is relatively inexpensive to manufacture, effective in use and which will not cause injury to the scalp of the user.
This invention embodies other novel features, details of construction and arrangement of parts which are hereinafter set forth in the speciiication and claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. l is a top plan view illustrating a massage and shampoo device embodying features of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of same.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken along the line 3--3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the device.
Referring now to the drawing for a better understanding of this invention, the massage and shampoo device is shown as comprising a body portion 5 which is preferably formed of resilient rubber having an annular flange portion I 2 which is serrated along its free edge to provide a plu rality of relatively large, stiff resilient fingers 6. A plurality of cone-shaped resilient fingers l are formed on the body portion 5 and disposed within the annular flange portion I2 to extend outwardly from a partition wall 8, and it will be noted that the cone-shaped iingers 'I extend beyond the ends of the relatively large, less resilient ngers 6.
An annular flange I3 extends around the top side of the partition wall '8 to dene therewith an annular recess l!) to receive a sponge I I which is preferably formed of sponge rubber and capable of absorbing a quantity of Water, A plurality of openings 9 are provided in the partition wall 8 for the passage of water from the sponge Il onto the scalp of the user adjacent the ends of the fingers I and within the space defined by the annularly disposed teeth 6. The sponge Il is secured within the recess I0 by applying a suitable rubber cement to the surface of the recess I0 and then positioning the sponge Il therein.
In assembling the sponge Il upon the body portion 5, it will be noted that the rubber cement should not be applied to the surface of the sponge i! adjacent the openings 9 provided in the partition wall 3 in order that the liquid contained within the sponge may be free to pass through these openings onto the scalp of the user. In the manufacture of a device of this kind, it is contemplated that the body portion 5 and sponge H shall be of a suitable size and shape to be effectively held in the hand of a user.
In the use of the device, the body portion 5 is adapted to be grasped by the lingers and thumb and with the palm of the hand disposed over the top of the sponge I I. In the use of this device for shampooing hair, the sponge II is adapted to be saturated with a quantity of water and/or liquid soap, and the scalp of the user is scrubbed by the teeth 6 and 'I under suitable pressure to stimulate the scalp, loosen dandruff and increase circulation of the blood. During the shampoo operation, additional quantities of water and/ or liquid soap may be distributed onto the scalp by applying pressure against the sponge II with the palm of the hand to cause the liquid therein to pass downwardly through the openings 9 formed in the partition wall 8.
During massaging or shampooing, it will be noted that the relatively resilient teeth I are extended beyond the ends of the relatively less resilient teeth 6 for engagement with the scalp prior to engagement of the teeth 6. In the event a more vigorous treatment of the scalp is desired, suiiicient pressure may be exerted against the device to bring the relatively heavy teeth 6 into engagement with the scalp.
While this invention has been shown in but one form, it is obvious to those skilled in the art that it is not so limited but is susceptible of various changes and modications without departing from the spirit and scope of the claimed invention.
I claim as my invention:
In a massage and shampoo device to receive a rubber sponge of a size suitable to be conveniently grasped within the hand of a user, a cup-shape body of resilient rubber to receive said sponge, a
relatively thick resilient annular peripheral flange depending from said body, said flange being serrated along its free edge to provide a plurality of resilient tapered teeth, a plurality of resilient cone-shape teeth projecting downwardly from said body within the area. dened by said annular ange, said body having apertures formed therein for the passage of liquid therethrough from ,said sponge.
