Description

1948. P. c. BOWEN GARMENT DRIER HEAD Filed Sept.
K W M NW W m W m H a H h Patented Nov. 9, 1948 UNITED STATES P TENTJ FW 3 spatial SeptemberIO,1945,SerialNo.615,320 it i 1 claim. (01. 34-106) f This invention relates to garment conditioning equipment of the character usually employed in cleaning establishments where it becomes necessary to press or otherwise remove wrinkles from coats, dresses and similar articles of wearing apparel.
The primary aim of this invention is to provide a garment drier head for apparatus usually employed in directing a blast of steam and hot air upwardly through the garment as the lower edge or skirt portion thereof is held against displacement.
One of the important objects of my invention is to provide a garment drier head having a number of uniquely formed and specially arranged clamps for cooperating with a body ofunique character and for combining with said body in removably securing in place the skirt portion of the garment being treated.
Further objects of this invention include the provision of an attachment for garment driers capable of effectively and positively maintaining the skirt portion of the garment being treated in a place where accidental movement thereof cannot occur while the said garment is being subjected to the smoothing action resulting from the introduction thereinto of a blast of hot air or steam; and the inclusion in said attachment of magnetic shiftable jaws that cooperate with a metallic foraminous body in applying gripping force to the garment. 7
Other aims of the invention will appear during the course of the following specification referring to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a garment drier head made pursuant to the present invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary detailed sectional view taken on line II-II of Fig. l, and
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the garment drier head.
Base In of the conventionally employed garment treating equipment now ordinarily used includes therein means for directing a blast of air upwardly through the mouth of said base and into a, garment I2 disposed thereabove and in circumscribing relation with the mouth of the base. Fans, blowers, hot air producing means and steam equipment is often-times used in base It] for creating the proper elements for removing wrinkles from the garment [2.
During operation of the machine, having base in as a part thereof, it is desirable and virtually necessary to positively, yet removably secure the skirt portion of garment l2 in a place where the blast of air from base garment from its operative position ordisarrange the same from a smooth condition. It is also one of the important requirements in the industry that garment 12 be maintained in'place without the use of pins or other piercing parts that would create objectionable holes or spots in the garment.
The head embodying the preferred form of my invention comprises a hollow foraminousbody I 4 of truncated cone form mounted upon base rough ll] through the medium of brackets or other suitable units l6. A number of clamps broadly designated by the numeral l8 are carried by body I4 as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1. These clamps ar arranged around the periphery of body M at its lowermost edge and each clamp comprises a jaw 20 with a supporting bar 22 hingedly mounted i as at 24. Jaw 20 frictionally engages bar 22 and therefore, will remain at any point throughout the length of said bar When the operator shifts the jaw to a point where it best comes into engagement with the lower skirt portion of garment I2. The jaw 2|] is magnetized to a suflicient degree to cause an attraction to be established between the said jaw 29 and the metallic body M. The inter-positioning of garment l2 between jaw 20 and body M will not effect the magnetic pull H p or attraction between these parts when jaw 20 is moved close enough to body M to allow its magnetic lines of force to be intercepted by the material from which body I4 is constructed. In some instances jaw 20 may be constructed to include an electromagnet and it has been found in practice that an electromagnet 2E centrally disposed with respect to the length of jaw 25! will be satisfactory particularly where. said jaw is covered with rubberized material to prevent slipping and marring of garment I2. The transverse portion of jaw 2|] extending to each side of the electromagnet 26 thereof is resilient to conform to the underlying surface of the garment when the clamp is in the operative posi tion. Hinge 24 of each clamp 18 is designed to present a stop 28 against which bar 22 will rest when the entire clamp assembly is manually moved from a pointagainst garment l2 and to a.
place where the electromagnet 26 will no longer establish an attraction that will hold the clamp against body [4. After the clamp is shifted outwardly from body I4, the action of gravity serves to pull the clamp assembly downwardly against stop 28 and in the position shown in dotted lines of Fig. 2.
Through the employment of clamps above set it will not dislodge the forth, the application and removal of garments l2 to and from respectively, the body M may be expeditiously accomplished and the passage of steam or hot air outwardly through garment I2 and through the openings of foraminous body M, will have absolutely no effect upon the efficiency and operation of clamps l8.
It is understood that garment drier heads having physical characteristics different from those illustrated and-described might be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention what 'I claim as new and desire to obtain by Letters Patent is: V H;
A garment drier part of the character described comprising a foraminous'open'end metal body adapted for insertion into the lower part 1 of the garment; and clamps, each pivo'tall'y secured at one end thereof to said body, said clamps Number REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the 1 file of this "patent:
