Description

Dec. 18, 1945. I w. F. PUNTE I 2,391,346
CROWN CAPPED CONTAINER Filed April 26, 1943 Patented Dec. 1 s, 1945' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE caowN oarrnn comma William F. Punte, Passaic, N. .L, assignor to Continental Can Company, Inc., New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application April 26, 1943, Serial No. 484,631 4 Claims. .01. 220-60) The invention relates generally to the art of manufacturing metallic receptacles and prima-' rily seeks to provide a container structure peculiarly adaptable for being efficiently sealed by a closure of the crown cap type.
It is well known that considerable difficulty has been experienced in the past in attempting to provide eflicient sealing closures of the readily removable crimped skirt or crown cap type in containers in which the opening to be sealed is Figure 2 is a vertical cross sectional view, the section being taken on the line 2-2 on Figure -1. Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary. sectional view showing the cover orclos'ure member apvery large, and this is particularly true in the tremity or mouth defining edge of the body is bent and rebent to provide a flatwise, outwardly and horizontally directed multi-thickness stiffener bead presenting an upper flat and relatively wide sealing gasket engaging surface and a clamp shoulder under which the crimped skirt of the complementary closure can engage, said closure having formed thereon a channel in which to receive said bead and having therein a sealing gasket for engaging in sealing contact on the flat upper surface of the bead and a crimped skirt. edge portion adapted to be deformed after placement of the closure on the container body to engage under said shoulder and removably secure the attachment of the closure on the container body.
Another object of the invention is to provide a v container of the character stated in which the body and closure are rectangular in shape, and in which the crimps in the skirt of the closure are arranged in symmetrically spaced groups.
plied to the body but not secured thereon.
Figure 415 a view similar to Figure 3 illustrating the cover securely clamped in position on the container body.
In the example of embodiment of the invention herein illustrated the container is shown as rectangular in shape and of the relatively shallow type employed in the packaging of sardines or the like. It is to be understood, however, that the invention is not limited in scope to embodiment in rectangular or oblong containers alone, or to containerswhich are relatively shallow. The invention comprehends embodiment thereof in any form of container having a large mouth and flexible walls defining that .mouth and which must be provided with a stiffened upper edge extremity of thenature herein disclosed in order to adapt the same for receiving readily removable closures of the crown cap or crimped skirt The herein disclosed container includes a base or' bottom 5 and side-and end walls designated 6 and 1, respectively, and cooperating with the bottom 5 in providing a relatively shallow oblong or rectangular container body.
At its upper extremity defining the open mouth, the container body is equipped with a multiple thickness, horizontally flattened stiffener bead 8 which stiflens the upper extremity of the body so as to enable secure sealing of the container with a readily removable closure of the crown cap or crimped skirt type. The bead may be formed by outwardly heading the body walls 6 With the above and other objects in view that will hereinafter appear. the nature of the invention will be more fully understood by following the detailed description, the appended claims and the several views illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a plan view illustrating the invention.
and 1 adjacent the upper end thereof and outwardly flanging the upper edge extremity and then'flattening the bead and flange to form the flat, sort of pleated stiffening rib or bead clearly illustrated in Figures 3 and 4 and which has the raw metal edge portion thereof disposed uppermost and directed outwardly.
The container body is adapted to be securely sealed by a closure including a relatively flat body portion 9 and an annular channel 10 shaped to receive and embrace the upper extremity of the can body and especially the stiffener head 8 thereof. The channel I0 is equipped with a sealing gasket ll adapted to engage and eiiiciently seal against the uppermost fiat surface. of the stiffener bead or rib 8 in the manner clearly illustrated in Figures 3 and 4. It will be observed by reference to Figures 3 an 4 that the channel I B is defined in part by an a shoulder I 2 adapted to be forced under the bead or rib 8 for securely, but removably clamping the closure on the body in the manner clearlyillustrated in Figure 4. In order to provide just the proper amount of resiliency ofthe skirt beneath the shoulder l2, said skirt is provided with symmetrically spaced groups of crimps l3,
By reason of the provision of the multiple thickness, horizontally disposed stiffener bead or rib l the upper extremity of the container body is made sufficiently rigid to enable the provision of an emcient seal by employment of the crown cap or crimped skirt type of closure member illustrated in the drawing, and it will be obvious that itis advantageous to provide a container of the character described with a closure member that can be readily pried off without the necessity of using a can opener, and which may conveniently be replaced to reestablish the closure of the container after th initial removal of the closure member.
. It is of course to be understood that the details of structure and the arrangement of parts may be variously changed and modified without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. A container of the character described comprising a rectangular body with rounded corners and having a bottom, wall extending uprightly smoothly and without interruption from the bottom to the upper extremity thereof and defining a large filler opening at said upper extremity, said upper extremity terminating in a horizontally flattened outwardly directed stiffener bead of uni-.
form thickness throughout the circumference thereof and formed by three thicknesses of the body extremity stock folded flat upon each other pleat fashion with a raw edge portion thereof disasensee smoothly and vwithout interruption from the bottom to the upper extremity thereof and defining a large filler opening at said upper extremity. said upper extremity terminating in a horizontally flattened outwardly directed stiffener bead of uniform thickness throughout the circumference thereof and formed by three thicknesses of the body extremity stock folded flat upon each other pleat fashion with a raw edge portion thereof disposed uppermost and directly outwardly, and a rectangular closure with rounded corners and ineluding a deep bead embracing channel for embracing and supporting said head against inward bending and having a sealing gasket therein for posed uppermost and directed outwardly, and a rectangular closure with rounded corners and including a deep bead embracing channel for embracing and supporting said bead against inward bending and having a sealing gasket therein for engaging in sealing contact with saidlbead, said channel being defined in part by an outer skirt extending below the bead and having a shoulder placed at such depth on said skirt as to be adapted to be forced under said flattened bead for securely .but removably clamping the closure on the body.
2. A container of the character described com engaging in sealing contact with said bead, said channel being defined in part by an outer skirt extending below the bead and having a shoulder placed at such depth on said skirt as to be adapted to be forced under said flattened bead for securely but removably clamping the closure on the body, said skirt being provided with symmetrically spaced groups of preformed crimps extending beneath said shoulder.
3. A container body comprising a bottom and side and end walls dimensioned to give to the body a rectangular shape with rounded corners. the upper edge terminus of said walls being folded upon itself pleat fashion to form a triple thickness horizontal stiffener bead with the raw edge disposed uppermost and directed outwardly.
4. A container of the character described comprising a rectangular body with rounded corners and having a bottom, walls extending 'uprightly smoothly and without interruption from the bottom to the upper extremity thereof and defining a large filler opening at said upper extremity, said upper extremity terminating in an outwardly directed and horizontally flattened stifiener bead of uniform thickness throughout the circumference thereof and formed of a multiple of thicknesses of the body extremity stock folded flat upon each other pleat fashion with a raw edge portion thereof disposed uppermost, and a rectangular closure with rounded corners and including a deep bead embracing channel for embracing and supporting said head against inward bending and having a sealing gasket therein for engaging in sealing contact with said bead, said channel being defined in part by an outer skirt extending below the bead and having a shoulder placed at such depth on said skirt as to be adapted to be forced under said flattened head for securely but removably clamping the closure on the body.
