Description

J. MGMURRAY. Cooking-Utensil,
No. 222,296. Patented ,Dec. 2, 1879.
INVENTOR %77Z Wa BY IM/MAM ATTORNEYS WITNESSES u PEIERB. FHOTD-UTMOGRAPNER, WASHINGTON. n c
JAMES MGMURRAY, OF EAST PORTLAND, OREGON,
IMPROVEMENT IN COOKING-UTENSILS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,296, dated December 2, 1879; applicationfiled August 26, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AM'ES MOMURRAY, of East Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cooking-Utensils, of which the following isa specification. Figure l is a topview of a kettle to which my improvements have been applied, parts being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre-- sponding parts.
The object of this invention is to provide kettles, sauce-pans, and other cookin g-vessels with straining and steaming attachments, which shall be so constructed that they may be readily applied to the said vessels, and attached and detached, as required, and which shall be simple in construction and inexpensive in manufacture. y
The invention consists in the detachable strainer provided, withthe U-wire at one end and the wire bolt at the other end, secured in place by the keepers, and the points,'with their ends projectingto enter holes in the rim of the vessel, and in the perforated diaphragm provided with wire legs secured in place by being passed through the holes of the said steamer, and providedwith a wire-loop'handle secured in place by having its ends passed beneath the looped parts of the wire legs that are above the said diaphragm, as hereinafter fully described. e J
A represents a cooking-vessel, which may be of anydesired shape and size. B is a castiron strainer, of such ashape and size as to fit into and cover about one-half of the mouth of the vessel A.
To one end of the strainer B is attached a U-shaped Wire, G, in such a way that its tWo ends may project far enough to pass through two holes formed in the rim of the vessel A, near its edge.
The wire 0 is secured tov the strainer B by sheet-iron keepers 0" attached to it, and is kept from slipping in the said keepers c by points 0 cast upon the said strainer B in such positions as to be upon the opposite sides of the bend of the said wire.
To the other end of the strainer B is attached a wire bolt, D, which slides in sheetiron keepers 01, attached to the said strainer B in such positions that the forward end of the bolt D may be slid into a holeformed in the rim of the vessel A, near its edge.
The middle part of the boltD is bent into a loop, 61 to serve as a handle foroperating the said bolt, and for putting in and taking out the strainer. H
When the strainer B is in place the bolt D may be locked by turning the handle d down to engage with a point, 61 cast upon the said strainer.
With this construction the wire C and bolt D hold the strainer B securely in place, and
allow it to be easily and quickly attached and detached, as may be required.
The strainer B may be provided-with slots or holes for the escape of the liquid, asmay be desired.
When the strainer B is to be applied to old vessels the holes to receive the ends-of the wire 0 and bolt D must be drilledwin it; but
part of the vessel A, and whichlis provided with holes or slots to allow the steam to pass through.
The diaphragm E is supported upon legs F, formed of wire bent into the proper'form and secured in place by being passed through holes in the said diaphragm E.
The diaphragm E is also provided with a handle, Gr, formed of wire bent into loop form, andwhich is secured in place by passing its ends beneath the parts of the wire F that are upon the upper side of the said diaphragm E.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The detachable strainer 13, provided with the U-wire C at one end, and the wire bolt D at the other end, secured in place by the keepers c d, and the points 0 d, with their ends projecting to enter holes in the rim of the vessel A, substantially as herein shown and described. I
2. The diaphragm E,pr0vided with wire legs F, secured in place by being passed through the holes of the said diaphragm, and pror'ided I
