' TOO'Il-I BRUSH Filed Feb. 23, 1937 INVENTOR Patented June 21, 1938 UNITED STATES 'roo'rn BRUSH Albert Loefller, New York, N. Y.
Application February 23, 1937, Serial No. 127,166
1 Claim.
This invention relates to brushes and more particularly to such as are used in cleaning the teeth.
All civilized people recognize the necessity of brushing the teeth at intervals, as a matter of appearance, cleanliness and health; as the natural teeth are disposed in semi-arcuate formation, it is obvious that a straight brush is not well adapted for thispurpose.
It is therefore an object of this invention to provide a brush, curved in conformity with a natural set of teeth, whereby better and quicker results are attained.
A further feature is in the provision of a brush suited to operate on the inner sides of the teeth in both upper and lower sets.
These prominent objects are accomplished by the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown in. the accompanying drawing, constituting an essential component of this disclosure, and in which:--
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a brush arranged for the inner surface of the teeth and. equipped with a guide.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Referring in greater detail to the drawing, the device will be seen to consist of a flat handle [5, of semi-circular outline, provided with a central circular opening [6 and having a stem I! set rigidlyin a curved plate backing 20, in the upper side of which is set a plurality of brush tufts 22, diverging at their outer ends and adapted to operate on the inner surfaces of a set of teeth.
The stem or shank I1 is set in the convex plate backing 20 and may be held by riveting as at 2|; and an arcuate guide 23, slidable on the stem, assists in retaining the brush in operating position.
In operation the handle is actuated in a manner to cause the brush tufts to move up and down reciprocatively, cleaning the interstices between the teeth eifectively, and also to move in a curved path at W111. 10
The operation is materially assisted by the guiding means, and is productive of satisfactory results in the shortest time possible.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a novel and unusually practical device for the purpose has been shown and described in its best known embodiments; therefore what is claimed as new and sought to secure by Letters Patent, is:--
In a tooth brush, a handle, a brush backing extending substantially at a right angle uniformly from both sides at one end of said handle, said backing curved to present-a convex face directed towards the opposite end of the handle and provided with brush tufts on its convex surface, its opposite concave side smooth, and a concavoconvex guide plate curved in conformity with said backing and slidable on said handle relative to said brush tufts, said guide plate wider and longer than said backing to cover the extremities of said tufts and smooth surfaced throughout to prevent abrasions when the brush is in use.
