Application May 25, 1935, Serial No. 23,494
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in tables of the folding leg type and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a table of this character embodying a. top which may be readily reversed, thus permitting either side of said top to be used for any desired purposes, such as the playing of different games.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a table of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efficient and reliable in use, compact, light in weight, attractive in appearance and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a table constructed in accordance with the present invention, a portion of the top thereof being broken away to disclose the interior of said top.
Figure 2 is a view in vertical transverse section through the tab-1e, taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view through a corner portion of the table, taken substantially 0n the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a view in vertical section through a corner portion of the table, showing the means for securing removable ash trays in position.
Figure 5 is a detail view in vertical section, taken substantially on the line 55 of Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a vertical sectional view, taken substantially on the line 66 of Figure 1.
Figure '7 is a sectional perspective view of a portion of the reversible top.
the corner portions of the frame I are braces 2.
Referring now to Figure 3 of the drawings, it will be seen that supporting legs 3 are hingedly mounted, as at 4, on the braces 2. The legs 3 are adapted to swing or fold into portions of the frame I, as indicated in dotted lines in Figure 3 of the drawings. When in unfolded position, the legs 3 bear against certain of the outer side walls of portions of the frame I. The legs 3 are releasably secured in unfolded position through the medium of slidable spring actuated bolts 5 which are engageable in sockets 6 provided therefor in said legs (see Figure 5). The bolts 5 are mounted in the frame I.
Mounted-in opposite sides of the frame I are aligned bushings I, Figures 2 and 8. The reference numeral 8 designates generally a reversible top which is rotatably mounted in the frame I. The reversible top 8 includes a frame 9 to the opposite sides of which panels Ill are secured, said panels IIJ being parallel and provided, if desired, with covers II of suitable material. The
Mounted in the frame 9, at right angles to and extending through the brace I I is a sleeve I6. The sleeve I6 is aligned with the bushings l and extending through said sleeve and into said bushings is a pivot rod I! (see Figure 8) through the medium of which the top 8 is rotatably mounted in the frame I. Retaining nuts or caps I8 are threaded on the end portions of the rod II, said retaining nuts or caps being provided with swinging handles or bails I9. observed that the retaining nuts or caps I8 are countersunk in the frame I. Referring now to Figures 1 and 6 of the drawings, it will be seen that the top 8 is releasably secured against rotation through the medium of spring actuated bolts 20 which are slidably mounted in opposite sides of the frame I for engagement in sockets 2| which are provided therefor in the frame 9 of said top 8 at the ends of the brace Id. The
Removably mounted on the corner portions of the frame I are ash trays 24. The ash trays 24 have formed therein grooves 25 (see Figures 3 and 4) for the reception of headed spring retracted pins 26 which are slidably mounted in the corner portions of the frame I.
It will be It is thought that the manner of using the table will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. The top 8 is normally secured against rotation in the frame I by the bolts 20. When it is desired to reverse the top 8, the bolts 20 are withdrawn from the sockets 2| against the tension of the coil springs 23, thus freeing said top 8 for rotation on the rod I]. If desired, different games may be provided on the opposite sides of the reversible top 8. To swing the legs 3 to folded position within the frame I, the bolts 5 are, of course, disengaged from the sockets 6. Any suitable means may be provided, if necessary or desired, for releasably securing the legs 3 in folded position.
It is believed that the many advantages of a table constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
In a table and in combination, an open frame, a reversible top swingable in the open frame, aligned bushings disposed in opposite portions of the frame with their inner ends flush with the inner sides of said frame portions, a sleeve disposed in the reversible top in alignment with and abutting at its ends against said bushings,
a rod extending through said bushings and sleeve and having threaded ends and nuts disposed in the outer sides of said opposite frame portions and on the threaded ends of the rods and abutting the outer ends of the bushings.
