4 Claims.
This invention relates to a philatelic mounting for displaying postage stamps and envelopes.
More particularly, the invention relates to an improved display device for use by stamp collectors to protect their specimens and for mounting their stamps and envelopes in such a manner as to enhance their artistic appearance.
A further object of the invention is to provide a background in contrasting color to the specimen which is mounted thereon and to protect the front of the specimen with a clear transparent sheet to prevent the hands from coming in contact therewith.
A still further object is to provide means for IE mounting the colored mats in albums so that 253 ing the method of cutting the blank for individual items.
Fig. 2a is a vertical section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section showing one means m for attachment of the mounting in an album;
while Fig. 4 shows a modified form of mounting attachment.
As disclosed in the several figures, 1 is a relatively heavy opaque background mat provided with a transparent flexible cover sheet 2 overlying its upper edge and covering the face of the mat. The mat 1 may be made of any suitable opaque material, such as paper, celluloid, or the like, and may be varied in tint to present a contrasting color to the specimen mounted thereon. As shown in Fig. 1a, the flexible transparent sheet 2 is folded over the upper edge of the mat 1 and is fastened to the upper rear portion 3 thereof by "adhesive, cement, or the like.
Because of the varying sizes of stamps and/or envelopes, the present philatelic mounting is pref' erably supplied in the form of large blanks of a size sufficient to mount any desired specimen or envelope and to then be cut down to fit thev particular item. In Fig. 2, a stamp 4 is mounted beneath the flexible transparent sheet 2 and attached to the backing mat 1 with rubber cement, stamp hinges, or the like, and the mounting cut to 55 such a size, for instance, on lines 3-3 and 44 so that the mounted stamps is positioned on a proper balanced background. Envelopes, fiown air mail covers, blocks of stamps, etc., may be mounted in the same manner, it being only necessary to cut the blank to the desired size.
Also, the individual mountings may be then placed in albums by the use of conventional philatelic hinge applied to the back of the mat. However, the present invention contemplates an improved means consisting of the use of adhesive strips applied to the rear surface of 1 as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4. In Fig. 3, an adhesive surfaced strip 5 of paper, linen, or the like, is attached to the upper portion of the backing mat and extends to the top edge thereof, whereupon the strip 5 is folded over and outward to present a depending adhesive surface 6 which may be moistened and the entire mounting detachably secured to an album page. The adhesive strip in this instance is not only attached to a substantial portion of the backing mat l, but also extends over the depending edge of the folded transparent sheet 2 and, therefore, binds the same to further insure against its displacement.
A modified means of attaching the mounting in an album is by the use of the adhesive strip as illustrated in Fig. 4. Here a strip 7 is partially coated with adhesive on its inner side, as at 8, while the entire outer surface 9 is coated. After applying the partially coated strip to the back of the mounting, the outer surface 9 may be moistened and the mounting attached on the album page. In all instances, whether a conventional hinge or either of the attaching means shown in Figs. 3 and 4 are used, the mounting is flexible so that the mat 1 may be raised above the album page for inspection of the specimen and so as to be readily detachable from the al-' the back of said mat and folded over the front of said mat, and a transverse adhesive strip overlying the upper edges of the flexible sheet and mat on the back thereof, said adhesive strip being folded over upon itself at the upper edge of the 4. A universal philatelic mounting for stamps or envelopes comprising a severable opaque mat blank having a transparent sheet attached only to the upper edge of said mat blank and overlying the front surface thereof, said blank being adapted to be severed to any desired size and to be detachably secured in an album.
