Description

v June 23, 1931. 5 ST JOHN GUARD-FOR GUYS AND THE LIKE Filed Sept. 10, 1928 Patented June 23, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE EVERETT ST. JOHN, OF WESTPOR'I, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO BELL TELEPHONE-- LABORATORIES, YORK INCORPORATED. OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A. CORPORATION. OF NEW GUARD FOR GUYS AND THE LIKE Application'flled September 10, 1928. Serial No. 304,868.
This invention relates to a shield or guard for guy wires and the like, and more particularly to a guard for guy wires which have a small diameter.
In accordance with my invention an elongated trough-shaped member having substantially a semi-circular cross section is provided with a hook-shaped projection at its lower end. This hook-shaped projection is ar-' ranged to be fitted around the guy anchor rod and is securely fastened thereto by forcing the guard against and securing it to the guy wire which is attached to the guy anchor rod. Spaced along the length of the guard are a plurality of holes through which bolts are inserted for securing the guard to the supporting guy wire. I
' This construction permits the guard or shield to'extend down over the guy anchor rod, thereby covering the entire exposed por-- tion of the guy anchor rod and the guy wire. Referring now to the drawing: Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a pole with guy wire being secured to the pole and the other end being secured to a guy anchor rod, the guy wire being provided with a guard made in accordance with my invention which not only covers the guy wire-but extends down over the guy anchor rod;
Fig. 2 is a side viewof the lower part of the guard which illustrates the method of fastening the guard to the guy wire and the guy anchor rod;
Fig. is a view in cross section taken at 3-3 of Fig. 2; j
Fig. 4 is a rear plan view of Fig. 3
Fig. 5 is a view of the guard illustrating the position of the hooked portion at its lower end before it has been installed.
, The guard hereinafter described is preferably made of metal and comprises an elongated member 1, having a substantially areshaped cross section, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5. The ends 2 and 3 are slightly rounded to prevent the injury of a body coming in contact therewith. Spaced along the guard 1 are a plurality of bolts 4, 5 and 6 which are arranged to clamp the guard 1 securely to the anchor rod 7 and to the guy wire 8. The
a guy wire attached thereto, one end of the bolts 5 and 6 are arranged to clamp the guy wire 8' securely against the underside of the guard 1, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, by means of the nut 9 and washer 10. The washer 10 is of rectangular shape having its hole to one side of the center,'this construction permitting a great amount of pressure to be applied to the nut 9 without causingthe guy wire 8 to be displaced.
The bolt 4 with its nut 11 and washer 12 is arranged to securely fasten the. projecting member 13 to the guard 1 at its lower end 2. The projecting member 13 is provided with a hook 14 at its lower end and is constructed of. resilient material. The member 13 as- 6 sumes a position as shown in Fig. 5 before it is installed. I
To install a guard constructed in accordance with my invention the first ste is to fasten the projecting member 13 in p ce at the lower-end 2 of. the guard 1, so that the hook-shaped portion 14 projects slightly beyond the end 2. The next step is to fit the hook 14 around the anchor rod 7. This is accomplished by holding the upper end 3 away from the guy wire 8. This allows the hook 14 of the member 13 to readily fit itself around the anchor rod 7. Due to the sha of the member 13 the guard 1 will not parallel with the guy wire 8, but will be some distance away at the end 3, while it is in con,- tact with the anchor rod at the end 2. The final step. is to force the end 3 against the guy wire 8 and fasten it thereto by means of the bolt 6. The bolt 5 is then also tightened whichfurtlier secures the guard'to the guy wire;
, It can be readily seen that the forcing down of the guard 1 onto the guy wire 8 and fastening it thereto causes a great amount of pressure to be exerted by the hook 14 upon the'anchor rod- 7 which securely holds theguard -1 in place on the anchor rod 7.
It is understood that various modifications of the invention may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
\ 1. A guard for gudy wires and the like comprising an elongate trough shaped member comprising ture therein and a which lies along the wire,'means for securm said guard to said wire comprising a lura-lity of threaded "members exten g through said guard into the "concave portion thereof, and means on said threaded member a washer having an ofi-set aperagainst said washer, oneedge ofthe said I washer adapted to bear against the concave 7 surface of the guard while the opposite ends of said washer securely holds the wire against j'the undersideof the guard when'said nut is T my n m h 7th g y tightened.
said threaded mem I said wire against the undersideof said guard.'
.2. A guard for guy and the like comprising an elongated trough shaped-membersaid guard having which lies along the wire,
said apera plurality of apertures therein, tures being out ofalignment the center line of said ard, means for secnr- 'ing' said guard to said wire comprising a plurality of threaded members extending through said apertures into the concave portion of said guard,
rs for securely holding In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe VERETT ST. JOHN.
