This invention relates to improvements 1n hat band assemblies, and more particularly to an easily locatable and removablehat l band.

It has heretofore been'proposed to employ easily locatable 'and removable hat band assemblies, especially with hats of the stiffer type, such as straw hats. According to the present invention, the hat band is mainn tained under tension while located upon the haty by the provision of an elastic member for supporting and connecting the final attach- 111g hooks to the hat band proper.

According to the present invention, a straw `hat having the brim 10 and crown 11 is to be provided with a hat band which is included in i a iinished assembly ready for application to It will be understood that the hat substantially` the hat. bands are woven of a strong, inelastic fabric. These bands are liable to slide up and down on the side wall of the Y y crown while in service, leading to the possible loosening of the band from the hat.r

The hat band 12 proper is provided at one end with attaching hooks 13 which are formed with prongs adapted to bite into the straw et the hat and thus secure this end against dis placement when traction is exerted along the line of the band. At the other end of the band it is providedwith a loop member 14 and an enclosing loop 15 forming a bow for the hat.

In the particular embodiment selected for illustration in Fig. 3, the hat band 12 is re- 1 bent at its end to form the loop member 14,

and brought back and laid flat against this yendof the band, with a small refold 16 which is secured by stitches 17 to the bandritself.

It is preferred to give 'this traction to the hat band by pulling with the thumb and foreiinger uponthe loop 22 of the elastic member in the manner shown in F l, since in this way there `is no soiling or danger of tearing of any part of the hat band proper. As the hat band is wound around the hat, th1s tensionl is maintained andbyreason of the securing ofthe metal plate 23y and its hooks 24at a distance from .the stitches 26, the

When the band has been brought to completely surroundthe hat, the hooked ends 24 are forcedrdownV into the fabric'ofthe hat band 12 and/or into the side wall of the hat crown according to the size of the hatfandth'e length of the hat band, and upon releasing the pulling tab formed` bythe Vloop 22the elasticity of the member maintains thehat band under uniform tension,4 regardless of any slight change in the shape `or length of the band by reason of change in the band itself` or the hat upon Which it is located.

It will particularly be noted that no tension is exerted upon the bow proper, and that the folded end 14 of the bow serves to hide and conceal the pulling tabY 22 While the hat is in service.

It is obvious that the invention is not limited solely to the form of execution shown,l but that it may be varied in many Ways Within the scope ofthe appended Claims.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a hat band assembly,ahatbandadapt- 15 ed to surround a hat, and having means at one end to secure 1t to the hat, an elastic member secured at one of its ends to the other end of the hat band and forming an extension of the hat band, a securing hook attached to said elastic member intermediate the length ofsaid member, and a member secured to said band and overlapping the elastie member'and hook to conceal the same normally, said elastic member serving as a tag by which the member and hat band may be placed under initial tension in locating the hat band around the hat and serving' after said hook is engaged to maintain said hat band under tension'.v v

In a lhatI band assembly, a hat band adapted to surround a han' and having means. atene' end to secure it to the hat, an elastic member seouredat one of its ends to the other end of the hatib'andr and `forming an exten- 36 sion of the hat band,` a securing'hook attached to said elastic member intermediate the length of said member, said elastic member serving as a tab by which the member and hatba'nd may be placed under initial tension 40 in locating thehat b and around the hat and serving after said hook is engaged to maintain said hat band under tensin.
